Rea: The Internet can be a valuable tool when looking for a home

The Internet is a great tool when you are looking to buy a home. By accessing the Meridian Board of Realtors Multiple Listing Service online, you can look at the most up-to-date information regarding properties for sale in the Meridian area. Most of the realty offices in Meridian participate in the Multiple Listing Service or MLS through the Meridian Board of Realtors and have Web sites that list their properties as well as properties listed by other real estate offices in the Meridian area.

In addition, the various Web sites usually have information about their company and agents as will as links to other sites that may be helpful. The Web sites of most real estate companies can be found in their advertising such as in the Showcase of Homes magazine available free at most convenience stores.

You can search by MLS number, price, school district, number of bedrooms, and baths, and square footage. A detailed description of the house or property including exterior and interior photos helps you to see which ones best suit your needs. Other available information pertains to type of heating and cooling, age of the home, roof age, appliances included, lot size, and other amenities. With the Web sites being constantly updated with new and sold listings, you can always have the most current information.

Although the Internet is a useful tool in the search for a home, it does not take the place of seeing the property in person. Location, surroundings, condition of the home, and layout can only be adequately assessed in person.

Use the Internet to narrow your search, and then call a real estate agent for additional information and to view the properties in person.
