Petal tops Clarkdale in tourney action

Top-ranked Petal scored six runs in the third inning and added four more in the fifth to defeat Clarkdale 12-7 in a battle of the state’s top two ranked slowpitch teams in the 18th annual Rush/Meridian Community CollegeInvitational Tournament Saturday at the Sammie Davidson Complex.
Clarkdale, 19-4, got three singles from Jessie Clark, a single and a double each from Ashley Bye and Chassidy Roberts, and two singles each from Lainie Simcox, Cayla Coleman and Sarah Beckman.
Union 14
SE Lauderdale 4
Union scored three runs in the second and fourth innings and tallied four times in the third and fifth frames in run-ruling Southeast.
Morgan Whitlock had a double and a home run for Union. Summer Richardson, Paige Holsen, Amber Smith, Ashley Walker and Bailee Viverette each had a pair of singles. The Lady Jackets also received six walks.
Shelby Smith was the winning pitcher.
Southeast got a triple and a homer from Martika Ivy, a single and a triple from Laci Maxwell and a pair of singles from Jessica Rose.
Enterprise 8
West Lauderdale 4
Enterprise snapped a 4-4 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to improve to 16-5.
Morgan Swancey had three singles for Enterprise. Baleigh Volking and Jessalyn Rozzell both had two singles and two RBIs. Paige Sheppard, Chelsea Jones and Haley Brooke Smith each had a pair of singles. Winning pitcher Summer Robinson added a triple.
West got a single and a double from Katie Ford, two singles each from Haley
Campbell and Josie Matthews and a triple from Tori Taylor.
Newton County 13
Quitman 7
The Lady Cougars trailed 4-1 before a six-run fifth carried them past the Lady Panthers.
Megan Munn had a two-run single and a two-run homer for Newton County.
Summer Alexander and winning pitcher Lacey Gilmore both had three singles.
Chelsea Pugh had a pair of singles.
Quitman, 12-3, got a single and a double from Porsche Jones and two singles each from Stormy Lewis, Constance Jones and Rachel Johnson.
NE Lauderdale 14
Brandon 4
The Lady Trojans improved to 12-5 as they took control with six runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth.
Shelley Odom had two singles and a home run to drive in six runs for Northeast. Kathryn Rawlings had three singles, while winning pitcher Kaley Hull had two singles and a triple. Leanna Young had two singles and Lauren Tardo had a double.
West Lauderdale 11
Poplarville 4
The Lady Knights pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Elizabeth Page led West with three singles and a triple. Josie Matthews had two singles and a double. Tambria Davis had three singles. Jessica Vick and Katie Ford both had two singles with Tori Taylor getting a home run.

A six-run sixth inning snapped a 5-5 tie as Tupelo knocked off Meridian.
The Lady Wildcats, 10-12, got a single and a triple from Victoria Moore, a single and a double from J’Quandra Hickman and two singles each from Kayla Brown and Lindsay Lang.

A 10-run second inning was more than enough for Enterprise, 17-5, in the five-inning victory.
Madalyn Helms and Haylee Roberts both had a single and a home run. Shelby Sheppard had a single and a triple. Selena Irby had two singles and Amanda Nester added a home run.

Northeast scored three times in the third inning in improving to 13-5.
Shelley Odom, Lauren Tardo and Brooke Walters each had two singles for Northeast.

Petal took a 12-4 lead through the first three innings only to have Newton County pull even at 12-12 with five runs in the top of the fifth.
The Lady Panthers scored twice in the fifth and sixth frames to get the win.
Newton County got three singles and two RBIs from Jamie Vance, three singles from Chelsea Pugh, two singles each from Kristen Pillsbury and Calli Cumberland, and an RBI single each from Summer Alexander, Kala Massey and Lacey Gilmore.
Meridian 11

Meridian got 15 hits and scored four times in both the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Moss Point.
Lauren Lang had four singles for Meridian, 11-12. Winning pitcher DeVonna Gilmer (9-9) had a single and a homer. J’Quandra Hickman had a single and a triple. Tamra Daniels had two singles and Kayla Brown had a triple.

Enterprise scored five runs in the second inning and added four more in the sixth in beating Newton County.
Enterprise, 18-5, got three singles each from Paige Sheppard, Morgan Swancey and Kristin Gavin. Winning pitcher Summer Robinson and Tiffany Taylor both had a single and a triple. Haley Brooke Smith, Baleigh Volking and Bayleigh Creel each had a pair of singles.
Newton County got three singles from Kristen Pillsbury, a single and a home run from Calli Cumberland, a single and a homer from Kasie Buckley and a pair of singles from Summer Alexander.

A seven-run first inning propelled Clarkdale, 20-4, past Brandon.
Chassidy Roberts had a three-run homer for the Lady Bulldogs. Lainie Simcox had two singles, a double and a triple. Cayla Coleman had two singles and a double. Sarah Beckman had three singles with Jessie Clark getting a pair of singles.

Petal struck for 11 runs in the first inning in crushing the Lady Knights.
West got two singles each from Kylie Rowell, Haley Campbell, Josie Matthews and Tori Taylor.

Clarkdale took control early, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second.
Chassidy Roberts had two singles and a homer for the Lady Bulldogs, 21-4.
Ashley Bye had three singles with Jessie Clark, winning pitcher Cory Roberson and Brittany Pippin each getting two singles. Sarah Beckman had a single and a double. Lainie Simcox added a triple.

Krystyn Davis had two singles, a triple and a homer to lead Quitman, 13-3.
The Lady Panthers also got three singles and a double from Constance Jones, three singles each from Shannon Mosley and Alison Herring, and a pair of singles from Stormy Lewis.

Union put up 11 runs in the third inning in routing Noxubee.
Brandi Covington had a single and a triple for Union. Bailee Viverette had a single and a double with Morgan Whitlock and winning pitcher Shelby Smith both getting a pair of singles.

Victoria Moore had a single and a homer to lead Meridian, 12-12, past the Lady Hornets.
Meridian also got a single and a triple from J’Quandra Hickman, two singles each from Shakira Stribling and Olivia Taylor and a triple from Tamra Daniels.

Northeast scored five runs in the first inning in the shutout of the Lady Golden Wave.
Leanne Young had a two-run homer and a pair of singles for Northeast, 14-5.
Winning pitcher Kaley Hull had a three-run triple. Lauren Tardo had a single and a homer and Kathryn Rawlings added a pair of singles.

Southeast scored eight runs in the seventh inning to pull away from Moss Point.
Martika Ivy had two homers and a single for Southeast, 12-11. Brittany Pounders had a single, a triple and a homer. J.J. Frazier added a single and a triple with Megan McMullen and Cortney Harper both getting a pair of singles.

Quitman padded a 3-2 lead with six runs in the top of the seventh inning in beating Union.
The Lady Panthers, 14-3, got three singles from Rachel Johnson and two singles each from Constance Jones and Lindsey Martin. Union got two singles from Shelby Smith and a double from Kayla Bates.

The Lady Wildcats, 13-12, put up 11 runs in the first inning of the 2 1/2 inning victory.
Kayla Brown had a single and a home run to drive in three runs. Tamra Daniels also had a homer. Diamond Bennoman had a single and a double and Lauren Lang had a pair of singles.
DeVonna Gilmer (11-10) got the win.
