Four inches of dust … or mud

I don’t think much thought was put into moving the green boxes on Highway 19 North and State Boulevard Extension. There are costs and inconvenience to some of the effected areas, like Chandler Road, Pine Springs Road, State Boulevard, Allen Swamp Road and all the areas around Okatibbee Lake, to Collinsville, all of Highway 494 from the Newton County Line to Highway 19 — plus all the subdivisions in this area and, believe me, there are several of them.

There are about 3,000 homes affected in this move. And probably 80 percent of them will have about 6 miles each trip at least two times a week, added to their travel.

Now, Hookston is a mixture of 4 inches of dust and crushed asphalt. With no decent place to turn around. Just wait till we have a week of rain. I was there last week when a lady drove up in a cloud of dust and said to me, “I paid $20 yesterday for a wash job on my car, now look at it.” I told her, “Just wait until it rains, then you’ll have 4 inches of mud. When it does rain and this road gets muddy, you will have to drive all the way through, because you will not be able to turn around.”

Since Mr. (Craig) Hitt has said, there were no plans to improve Hookston Road, I would like for other supervisors to look a the conditions there and make a public statement of their findings.

I still will vote for the green boxes and also vote for them to be put back where they were.
