William Aubrey Galyean
Farmer, mechanic, automotive machinist,
parts store manager, husband and daddy
Funeral services for William Aubrey Galyean will be held today at 10 a.m. at Jones Chapel Church of God, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ron Leonard will officiate.
Mr. Galyean, 90, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at 1:15 p.m. at Queen City Nursing Center.
Mr. Galyean was born Oct. 14, 1915, to W.A. “Tince” and Ethel Irby Galyean. He was the oldest of five children and the only boy.
He attended Dry Creek School and, after it burned, graduated from Clarkdale High School. He attended junior college at Scooba and began his career as a mechanic for the W.B. Fountain Garage. He later worked for M.R. Adams Supply Co. as a mechanic and automotive machinist from 1936 until 1956. During the time he worked for Adams, the company was a dealer for Hudson Automobiles and Cushman Motor Scooters, as well as several other lines connected to the automobile dealer, machine shop and parts store operation. The company was located on Fourth Street between 21st Avenue and 22nd Avenue in downtown Meridian.
Following the closing of Adams Supply Co., he joined George Gartrell at Automotive Products Co. on Front Street across from the Union Station Depot. That business was also an automotive parts store and machine shop operation that rebuilt engines for cars, trucks, tractors and other industrial machinery. During the time he worked for Automotive Products, the business expanded to have parts stores in several surrounding towns. Automotive Engine and Crankshaft Co. on A Street, near the old Royal Crown Bottling and Acme Millwork plan, originated from this business. The engine and crankshaft company was an assembly-line-type operation for rebuilding engines and crankshaft kits.
While he was making a living in the parts stores and machine shops, he had a farm with his father and son on Valley Road with cows, hogs, goats and horses. He grew corn, hay, watermelons and other vegetables on the farm.
Constantly with a “project” of some kind in his garage at home, his recreation was building or rebuilding things. The things ranged from buggies and wagons to cars, trucks and tractors or other farm implements.
He always found time for his family and was sure there were ponies, horses, dogs and projects of interest for his children.
Mr. Galyean was active at Jones Chapel Church of God for many years and served on various boards and committees as well as teaching Sunday School.
After he retired from Automotive Products at age 65, he spent his time caring for his wife, Nettie, and rebuilding cars, trucks and tractors. His last project was rebuilding a 1929 Ford 2-door Sedan in 2004.
