Northeast tracksters qualify for North State

Northeast Lauderdale, West Lauderdale and Neshoba Central ventured to Pearl last weekend for the Region 2-4A Track and Field Meet, and a host of local participants qualified for this weekend’s Class 4A North State Meet at Oxford.
The Northeast boys and girls each finished third overall at the region meet. The Trojans picked up 73 points and trailed Pearl (162) and Ridgeland (100). Kosciusko was fourth and Noxubee County fifth, while West Lauderdale was eighth among the 15 teams with 20 points. Neshoba Central finished 12th.
The Lady Trojans, meanwhile, picked up 91 points and were just six behind second-place Ridgeland. Pearl won the event with 142 points, while Indianola Gentry was fourth and Noxubee County fifth. West Lauderdale tied for seventh with 12 points and Neshoba Central finished 10th.
The top four finishers in each event qualified, and Northeast will be sending a host of participants to Oxford Saturday. Here’s a rundown of all of the area’s qualifiers:
• Northeast’s Sholonda Truman finished third in the 100m dash with a time of 12.55 seconds, and she was also third in the 200m dash with a time of 25.80 seconds.
• Teshae Portis of Northeast was fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.02.
• Northeast’s Carlisha Barfield was first and teammate Bianca McDonald second in the 800m run, as Barfield finished in 2:37.41 and McDonald in 2:38.32.
• West Lauderdale’s Anna Smith was second in the 1600m run at 6:03, while Barfield was fourth at 6:16.
• Three Northeast girls relay teams qualified. Truman, Portis, Dorothy Love and Norrianna Haynes were third in the 4x100m relay with a time of 51.20.
Love, Haynes, Truman and Kandance Knight were third in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:46.21; and Portis, Haynes, McDonald and Truman were third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:22.57.
• Knight won the girls long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 1 inch and was fourth in the triple jump with a total of 33 feet, 1 inch.
• Neshoba Central’s Brittney Mayfield was second in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 7.5 inches, while Northeast’s Jalonda Coats was fourth with a throw of 30 feet, 8.25 inches. Coats was also third in the discus with a throw of 94 feet, 2 inches.
• Northeast’s Courtney Scott was fourth in the boys 200m dash with a time of 23.32.
• West Lauderdale’s Corey Rigdon was second in the 800m run with a time of 2:08.01, while Northeast’s Antonio Serton was third with a time of 2:11.09.
• Rigdon won the boys 1600m run with a time of 4:42, while Northeast’s Brach Barham was second in 4:46. Barham also won the 3200m run in 10:07.
• Stanton Wallace of Northeast won the 300m hurdles in 40.29 seconds; and Wallace, Scott, Maurice Langston and Lamar Truman were third in the 4x100m relay event with a time of 44.61.
• Truman, Scott, Langston and Coleman Conley were third in the 4x200m relay in 1:34.10; and Wallace, Serton, Truman and Langston were second in the 4x400m relay in 3:30.51.
• Northeast’s Elijah Lee was second in the boys discus with a throw of 128 feet, 7 inches.

Region 3-3A Meet
at Pearl …
Southeast’s boys were ninth out of 15 teams with eight points, while the Southeast girls placed 10th with eight points in the Region 3-3A Meet which was also held at Pearl last weekend.
Newton County’s boys were eighth in the same meet with 26 points.
Southeast’s Brittany Smith was second in the girls 3200m run, finishing in 14:22.87. She was the only area girls qualifier, although Choctaw Central’s Lacie Fields just missed with a fifth-place finish in the shot put (28 feet, 3.5 inches).
On the boys’ side, Southeast’s Josh Johnson was third in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.48, while Newton County’s Brandon Labue won the 3200m run with a time of 10:44. He also won the 1600m run in 4:55.
Newton County’s Fred Lyons also qualified in the 110m hurdles, finishing in 16.08, while Southeast’s Detrick Landrum was second in the long jump at 20 feet, 8.5 inches.
Southern Miss football signee Alex Michael of Southeast was also a qualifier, finishing fourth in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet, 8.5 inches.
