Area Roundup: West routs SEL in baseball action

The West Lauderdale Knights banged out 12 hits in their 14-4 prep baseball victory over Southeast Lauderdale Monday night.

The Knights improved to 7-1 on the season and will visit Neshoba Central today in a key Division 4-4A contest.

West Lauderdale scored three in the first, three in the second, three in the fourth and five in the fifth. Southeast Lauderdale’s runs came in the fourth inning.

J. Stoddard was the winning pitcher as he limited Southeast to six hits. Demetric Young took the loss for Southeast.

The Knights pulled out the heavy lumber in this game. Cody Freeman hit two home runs while Brock Mosley hit a three-run homer. Duke Snider had three hits and Tyler Vick hit a double and a triple.

Newton Co. 16

Morton 6

The Newton County Cougars improved to 7-3 on the season with a Division 5-3A win over Morton Monday.

Robert Westbrook was the winning pitcher as he improved his record to 3-1. Westbrook had five strike outs and no walks.

Westbrook helped his own cause at the plate as he smashed a three-run homer and two singles. Jared Cavenaugh hit a double and a single. Drew Wilson and Jeremy May both hit a double.

Justin Fowler took the loss.

Macon Central 10

Emmanuel 0

The Macon Central Vikings improved to 8-3 with their victory over Emmanuel.

Jason Sellers was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 3-1. Sellers pitched six innings, gave up two hits and fanned 11 batters.

Reid Brown hit a homer and a single to lead the Central. Chris Suddith added a double and a single, while Clint Brown hit three singles.

Sumter Aca. 2

Bill Tartt and Stephen Davis each hit a home run in a losing cause for Sumter Academy Monday night.

Both teams had 11 hits, but Marengo’s came when runners were on base.

SE Lauderdale 4

E’trareo Warren banged out four hits to lead Meridian High to a win over Southeast Lauderdale.

Meagan Patton was the winning pitcher as Meridian improved to 6-3 on the season.

Newton Co. 12

Carthage 2

The Lady Cougars of Newton County upped their record to 6-1 Monday night with a victory over Carthage.

Lindsey Stevens was the winning pitcher as she allowed one hit and struck out three batters. Kelsey Sikes took the loss for Carthage.

Brittany Cochran hit a two-run home run to lead Newton County, while Kasie Buckley and Summer Alexander each had a hit.

Enterprise 10

NEL 0

The Lady Bulldogs of Enterprise banged out 10 hits and 10 runs in their win over Northeast Lauderdale Monday.

Laura Speed was the winning pitcher.

Baleigh Volking hit a homer and a single to pace Enterprise. Bayleigh Creel and Paige Sheppard each added two singles for the Lady Bulldogs.

MCC sweeps

Holmes CC

Meridian Community College swept Holmes in men’s and women’s tennis action Monday.

In men’s doubles, Thomas Dobert and Scott McNamara took a 8-0 win. Kennard Johnson and Matt Schanrock won the No. 2 doubles 8-2. In the No. 3 doubles, Scott Truesdale and Eric Smith won 8-0.

Dobert won his singles match, 6-1, 6-1 while McNamara claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles. Shanrock won his No. 3 singles match, 6-0. 6-0 and Johnson won his No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0. Smith won the No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Truesdale won the No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

MCC now stands at 3-2. The Eagles will be hosts to West Alabama today starting at 2 p.m. at the Northeast Tennis Center. Three members of the UWA team played at MCC last season.

The MCC women won their match against Holmes, 9-0.

In the No. 1 doubles, Sierra Woolery and Ann Claire Marascalco won their match 8-1. Kourtney Harris and Brianne Boudreaux won the No. 2 doubles 8-0, while the No. 3 doubles resulted in a default to MCC,

All of the MCC players won their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0 with a default at the No. 5 and 6 singles. MCC is 2-3 on the season.
