Meridian attorney Robert D. “Robbie” Jones has been chosen by Mayor John Robert Smith to succeed Judge Lester Williamson Jr. as municipal judge for the city of Meridian.

The Meridian City Council is expected to confirm Jones’ appointment today at a special city council meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the Employee Council Room on the second floor of Meridian City Hall.

“I have known Robbie Jones for many years, and he is imminently qualified to serve as a city judge” Smith said. “He has argued cases in front of municipal court, circuit court, justice court, chancery court and the Mississippi Supreme Court.”

Smith said Jones also served as a reserve police officer for the city of Meridian, giving him special knowledge of how the judicial system works.

Jones could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
