Area Basketball Roundup: Lamar boys top Presbyterian

Nathan Harrison heated up from long range, nailing six 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 30 points to lead homestanding Lamar School to a 70-65 victory over Presbyterian Christian in high school basketball action Tuesday night.
Andrew Watkins added 18 points for Lamar, which improved to 15-10 on the season. The Raiders were up 39-28 at halftime.
Adam Doleac pumped in 22 points and Alec Edwards scored 13 for fifth-ranked Presbyterian, which fell to 17-9.
Lamar returns to action Friday at Starkville Academy.

The third-ranked team in the Mississippi Private School Association jumped out to a 36-11 lead over host Lamar in the first half and coasted past the Lady Raiders.
Presbyterian, which is now 26-3, got 15 points from Anna Patterson.
Ashley Carmichael scored 10 points to lead Lamar.

Newton Co. girls 53
The Lady Bulldogs turned a five-point halftime lead into a victory in non-division action at Decatur Tuesday night.
Bay Springs got a game-high 32 points from Nadosha Strickland and 13 from Leatrice Ulmer.
Newton County, which fell to 10-14 overall, got 13 points from Tina McDougal and 11 from Chad Moore.
The Lady Cougars are at Velma Jackson Friday.

Quitman girls 67
West Lowndes 55
The Lady Panthers earned their first victory of the season on Senior Night, as host Quitman whipped West Lowndes behind 28 points from sophomore Sooby Cooks.
Sarah Whaley tallied 11 points while Shae Gamblin chipped in 10 for the Lady Panthers.

The Panthers were not as fortunate, as West Lowndes nipped Quitman in a hotly-contested boys’ game.
Cordero Laphand led the host Panthers with 17 points while Radarius Owens scored 16 points and Rico Price added 10 points.
Quitman will travel to South Jones Friday.

The Lady Yellowjackets improved to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in Division 5-2A action with a victory over the Lady Rebels.
Quill Parker tossed in 21 points for Union, while Carlena Clemmons scored 18. The Lady Jackets go to Williams-Sullivan Friday.
Shanequa Bufkin tallied 21 for Scott Central and Quentinette Odom scored eight.

MCC men 92
The visiting Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding lead in the first half, then held off a late rally by the Eagles to knock off Meridian in a game played late Monday at MCC’s Ivy Sports Center.
Gulf Coast, which improved to 12-6 overall and 5-2 in South Division play, led by as many as 22 points in the first half and was up 51-32 at halftime. The Bulldogs led by 20 with 3 minutes before Cavin Payton led MCC’s last-ditch rally.
Payton scored 11 of his 17 points in the final 3 minutes, when the Eagles got as close as 93-90 with 24 seconds left.
Jordan Payne led all scorers with 30 points, while Dexter Leflore and former Northeast Lauderdale standout Alex Ford had 15 points apiece. MCC is now 11-7 overall and 3-4 in division play.
Henry Salter led Gulf Coast with 25 points.

Pearl River 61
The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 12-point lead at halftime and made it stand up in a South Division win at Poplarville Monday.
East Central got 19 points from LaSaundra Harrison and 15 from Andrea Dubose. They combined for seven 3-pointers.
Shannon Lloyd had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Valerie Harris had 11 points and nine rebounds for East Central, which improved to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in division play.
Pearl River (2-16, 1-6) was led by Angela Miller’s 17 points.

The Warriors were not as fortunate, falling to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in South Division play with Monday’s loss on the road.
Paul Milligan led the Warriors with 13 points, while Andre Coleman and Earnesto Green had seven each.
Wesley Jones had 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead the host Wildcats, who improved to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in the South.

EMCC men 67
The Lions dropped their 12th straight contest with a home loss to Itawamba Monday night in Scooba.
EMCC, 2-15 overall and 0-6 in North Division play, trailed just 31-27 at halftime.
Mark Ford pumped in 18 points to lead the Lions, while Cornelius Miles and Patrick Jackson had 10 points apiece.
Itawamba (10-9, 3-3) got 19 points from Dell Coleman.

The visiting Lady Indians put four players in double figures and got a game-high 15 points from Shameika Boyce to knock off host EMCC in North Division action Monday.
Endya Burton and Rebecca Mitchell scored nine points apiece to lead the Lady Lions, who fell to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the North.
Itawamba moved to 8-10 and 3-3.
