3 arrested in 2009 slayings of mother and child

JACKSON, Miss. — Officials say three arrests have been made in the 2009 slayings of a Sharkey County mother and her 3-year-old daughter.

Sharkey County Sheriff Lindsey Adams says the three were taken into custody Monday. Identities were not available.

Thirty-one-year-old Karitha Carroll, of Cary, and her 3-year-old daughter were discovered stabbed to death in a bedroom in their home on Sept. 23, 2009.

A relative found the bodies.

Authorities at one time said the deaths might have been a case of murder-suicide. However, friends of the mother said they didn't believe that, and the coroner said she found it medically hard to believe that the injuries indicated murder-suicide.

The Sharkey County coroner said Carroll had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and the daughter had several slash wounds and her throat had been cut.
