Police: Jackson TV meteorologist faces sex charges

MADISON, Miss. —

A Jackson, Miss., television meteorologist was arrested Thursday for alleged inappropriate contact with a girl under the age of 16, authorities said.

The Madison Police Department said Eric Law, 32, of Madison, who works at WLBT-TV, faces two counts of sexual battery and two counts of gratification of lust. Municipal Court Judge Dale Danks set bond at $200,000.

WLBT reported that Law appeared before Danks and was released after posting bond.

WAPT-TV reports that prosecutors, during the court hearing, said Law had multiple encounters with the girl. They did not give her age or other details.

"The investigation is still in its infancy," said his attorney, Matthew Baldridge. "He's cooperating with law enforcement. At this stage, we're just really letting the Madison Police do their job."

Baldridge said it likely will be weeks, or possibly months, before he and his client get all of the information compiled in the investigation.

"There's not a lot of substance at this point," he said. "We are not even sure what the exact allegations are at this point."

Madison police Lt. Eddie Lawrence said the investigation started in Rankin County, but authorities turned the case over to Madison police.

"They had contact. They had legitimate contact initially and then, again, some alleged inappropriate behavior. We're going to take every step to make sure justice is served," Lawrence said.

Asked about his client's demeanor after the arrest, Baldridge said, "Under the circumstances, he's holding up OK. He's very concerned and obviously nervous and scared. He's a good kid. He has no prior criminal history and the whole thing is pretty surreal at this point."

Law has worked at WLBT since 2004. "Eric Law has been suspended until further notice," said WLBT News Director Wilson Stribling said in a story posted on the station's web site.
