Man sentenced for impregnating Gulfport girl

GULFPORT, Miss. —

A 35-year-old Wiggins man has been sentenced to serve 25 years in prison for the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl who gave birth to his child.

The Sun Herald reports Circuit Judge Larry Bourgeois sentenced James Upchurch on a guilty plea Monday in Harrison County Circuit Court.

Because of the nature of the crime, Upchurch is not eligible for early release or parole. He also will be required to register as a sex offender the rest of his life.

Gulfport police arrested Upchurch in July 2011 after the girl's mother filed a criminal complaint.
