JACKSON, Miss. — A federal court has given attorneys for Tupelo businessman Ray Lamont Shoemaker until about Feb. 19 to file briefs in his appeal of a conviction in a kickback-bribery scheme.
The 5th U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans said this past week that the government would have 14 days after Shoemaker's brief is received to file a response.
Shoemaker was sentenced in September to 55 months in federal prison, a $10,000 fine and three years' post-release supervision on six counts related to a kickback conspiracy. Shoemaker is in a federal prison in Memphis, Tenn.
The crimes centered on Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville, of which Shoemaker was the administrator.
The 5th Circuit has twice turned down motions from Shoemaker to be released on bond pending his appeal.
