Jones County intersection to be reworked

LAUREL, Miss. —

A dangerous intersection in Jones County is about to be reworked to prevent traffic accidents.

Southern District Transportation Commissioner Tom King announced Wednesday that a $1.1 million project will prevent Magnolia Road motorists from crossing all four lanes of U.S 84.

The Hattiesburg American reports the project will remove the current median crossing and replace it with a J-turn which will make motorists merge U.S. 84, cross the median, then merge with traffic to return to Magnolia Road.

Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna says the intersection near the Powers community east of Laurel has cost millions of dollars in property damage and many injuries. In November, a woman and her 10-year-old daughter were injured in a collision.

King said construction is expected to begin in early 2013.
