Woman's death investigation ongoing

VICKSBURG, Miss. —

The death of a Warren County woman whose body was found last week in a wooded area is being investigated as a homicide.

Vicksburg Police Walter Armstrong says the woman has been identified as 30-year-old Shanell Burden Stowers.

Deputy County Coroner Kelda Bailess tells the Vicksburg Post that the body was identified through dental records. He says autopsy results are pending.

Stowers' remains were found at about 5:30 p.m. Friday in a wooded area. She had been missing since Oct. 4 when she did not show up to pick up her children from a relative's house for a doctor's appointment.

Authorities say Stowers' car was abandoned near the Vicksburg city limits and the body was found at the bottom of one of the many steep hills in the area.
