Suspect says he was victim; acted in self-defense

GAUTIER, Miss. — A capital murder suspect told a municipal judge he was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed a Gautier man in September.

The Sun Herald reports 34-year-old Jawara Harris initially was arrested on a charge of murder in the Sept. 29 shooting death of 25-year-old Cornelius Rashad Ramey of Gautier.

Ramey was found dead inside his truck, which was parked outside a friend's home.

Harris pleaded not guilty Monday to capital murder and an unrelated charge of second-offense domestic violence, which upon conviction would become a felony domestic violence case.

Municipal Judge Jason Thornton set Harris' bond on the capital murder charge at $500,000.

It was unclear whether Harris has an attorney.
