MERIDIAN —
Northeast Lauderdale High School bullied rival Southeast Lauderdale High School all night, as the Trojans beat the Tigers 38-0 to move to 2-1 on the season.
Northeast got things started early, as running back Stevie Sanders broke a 25-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the game. Sanders rushed for 80 yards on 10 carries in his first game back from a two-game suspension to start the year.
“I was hungry,” Sanders said. “I was real hungry. It was tough sitting on the sidelines for two games, but I came back ready.
“I was just trying to make plays, and my blockers were blocking so I could do what I needed to do.”
Later on in the quarter, it was fellow running back Phillip Everett who ran it in from 45 yards out to make the score 14-0 Northeast. Everett rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Northeast's running back tandem of Everett and Sanders wore down the Tigers all game, controlling the clock and keeping the Trojan defense on the sidelines.
“I've been knowing Sanders was going to be pretty good,” Northeast coach Curt Blackburn said. “Phillip Everett, he's had 140 yards in the previous games. I knew they would go after him, and Stevie (Sanders) would have a good night.”
Southeast couldn't get anything going on offense, as the Trojan defense did a good job of applying pressure and getting to the quarterback.
Southeast quarterback Andrew Black had been dealing with blitzing defenders all night, but on the Tigers final drive before the half, Black was dealt a punishing blow, as he pulled his hamstring after getting hit.
“It was the last play and I was rolling out,” Black said. “The defender hit me once and I shook it off. My leg came forward, and he kind of landed on top of me and I just split and pulled it.”
“I can almost guarantee I'll be out next game. I pulled it before, and it took a while to recover.”
Without its starting quarterback, Southeast continued to struggle in the second half. The Tigers were left without much of a passing threat and were forced to run fairly predictable plays the rest of the night.
“We had to change everything,” Southeast coach Charles Black said. “We were very vanilla after that. We got whooped up front tonight.”
After another touchdown from Everett put the Trojans up 22-0, cornerback Troy Neely returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown to eventually put Northeast up 30-0. A touchdown run from Josh Everett later in the quarter capped off the scoring, as the Trojans rolled to an easy 38-0 win.
“It's great to get that ball rolling back into our favor,” Blackburn said. “They had beat us two years in a row, so to get the ball back in our favor, that was a good thing.”
Southeast (1-2) return home to face West Lauderdale next week, while the Trojans (2-1) travel to Neshoba Central.
“We got a tough opponent next week,” Blackburn said. “We are going to need a good week going into it.”
