MERIDIAN —
For the second time in three days, Southeast Lauderdale's chance for a state championship was put on hold.
After losing 9-3 to Kossuth on Saturday in its first chance to wrap up the MHSAA Class 3A baseball state championship, the Tigers' shot Monday was postponed until 4 p.m. Wednesday due to the threat of inclement weather in Jackson. Southeast won Game 1 of the best-of-3 series 7-1 on Thursday. The 31-7 Tigers last won a state title in 1966.
"All it does is give us more time to practice but the guys are tired of practicing," Southeast coach Shay Cooper said. "They're ready to get out there and play.
"I think everybody is tired of waiting and stretching this thing out. Even all the parents I talked to, are tired of it getting dragged out."
The delay does give both team's pitching staffs a chance to rest. But Cooper didn't think the extra two days would help the Tigers much.
"It'll give their four or five pitchers a chance to get ready," he said. "So they'll have all hands all deck.
"Colby (Ramey) was ready to go (Monday), so it really doesn't affect us much."
Ramey pitched Southeast to that Game 1 win, allowing just five hits on 65 pitches in a complete game. The senior right-hander threw only 22 balls, including just nine through the first four innings. Southeast's offense, meanwhile, broke loose for a three-run and a four-run inning against 25-7 Kossuth starter Tyler Nelms.
On Saturday, though, the roles were reversed. Aggies starter David Gibson kept Southeast in check, allowing just a run in the first after Hunter Thrower doubled to open the game, until the seventh inning. And Kossuth broke loose for a nine-run fourth inning, knocking Southeast starter Ledarious Clark and reliver Josh Litchfield off the mound during the 13-batter frame.
