Roundup — Northeast knocks off rival West to open division play

MERIDIAN —     Northeast Lauderdale opened Division 5-4A play by defeating visiting West Lauderdale 8-5 on Thursday.

   Elizabeth Barnacastle went 2-for-3 to lead the 3-7 Trojans, while Kaitlyn Ford and Haley Randall each doubled for Northeast. Adrianne Peters earned the win for the Trojans, who host Quitman on Monday.

   The Panthers moved to 2-0 in Division 5-4A play with another shutout win. Tori Dew led Quitman (7-4) with a double and grand slam as she finished 3-for-3 on the road. Annie Cooks doubled and had two hits.

   Quitman visits Clarkdale on Saturday.

defeat Gulf Coast

   The East Central Community College men’s soccer team captured its first victory of the 2012 season by defeating Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College by a 3-2 margin Wednesday night on the Perkinston campus.

   Soccer coach Kenneth Thompson was obviously pleased with his team’s performance in capturing the program’s second win against the Bulldogs.

   "We played well and just took it to them,” said Thompson of the Warriors, who improved to 1-2 on the young campaign. “It was a great game for the spectators.”

   Scoring for ECCC were Taylor Potter, Ryne Riebock and McGee Ledbetter.

   Credited with scoring assists were freshman forward Will Thompson of Newton County and freshman midfielder Kennon Craft.

   The East Central women were not as fortunate and were blanked 4-0. The squad is winless after two contests.

   "Our girls gave a great effort but were simply outmatched,” said Thompson.

   Next up for ECCC are matches with Meridian Community College today at 3 and 5 p.m. on the Decatur campus.

   The ECCC teams host Holmes Community College on Tueday, beginning at 3 p.m.

MCC splits home matches against JCJC

   Meridian Community College soccer opened its 2012 home schedule Wednesday night at C.D. Smith Field against Jones County Junior College and the night ended with a split for the home squad. The MCC women dropped a 3-1 decision, while the MCC men held on for a dramatic 3-2 win.

    MCC will return to action today at East Central Community College.

   The Eagles grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the match, but Jones bounced back to take the two-goal victory. Taylor Hanes delivered the lone goal of the game for MCC with 40:53 remaining in the first half. Kristen Morris was credited with the assist on the goal for the Eagles.

    Kimberly Murray tied the game at 1-1 with 31:45 left in the first half by scoring on a free kick for JCJC and Morgan Pace gave the Bobcats the lead with a goal with about 12:51 left in the first half to make the score 2-1. Cassidy Brinson added the final goal of the match for JCJC with 17:54 left to give the Bobcats a road victory.

    MCC dropped its overall record to 1-1, while Jones improved to 2-0-1.

    Kellen Roberts scored a pair of goals to lead MCC to a one-goal victory in men’s action at C.D. Smith Field. Roberts scored his first goal in the opening seven minutes of action and added his second goal of the match with 19:17 remaining in the first half. Blake Hardin also added a goal in the first half to pace the Eagles in the scoring department.

    Jones scored a pair of goals in the second half, but MCC was able to hold off a late charge to take the win. Zack Traylor and Kevin Ndongo each added a goal in the loss for JCJC.

    MCC improved to 2-0 with the home win, while Jones fell to 0-2 for the season.

The Lady Cougars blanked Houston 10-0 Saturday at Freedom Ridge Park, completing an easy sweep of their best-of-three, Class 4A State Championship Series and gaining a measure of revenge after falling short a year ago.

Enterprise falls twice to East Webster
It just wasn't to be.
After 16 innings of big plays and tense moments, the Enterprise Lady Bulldogs fell just short of their third MHSAA Class 2A State Fast-Pitch Softball Championship on Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision in the decisive game three. But EHS head coach Davey Dewitt said he was pleased with the way his team played, battling East Webster to the last out.

Neshoba Central’s last two rounds of the state softball playoffs involved grueling series wins over Lake Cormorant and New Hope. And while no one knows what today holds in the Class 5A State Championship Series, the Lady Rockets zipped through East Central like a hot knife through butter in Ridgeland Friday night.

Enterprise tops East Webster 6-3
Just one more win.
That's how far away the Enterprise Lady Bulldogs are from closing out an amazing season. After beginning the year 4-8, EHS has won 15 of their last 19 games, including Friday afternoon's 6-3 win over East Webster in the MHSAA Class 2A Fast-Pitch Softball Championships.
