MERIDIAN —
Following a 31-0 shutout-victory against Mississippi Delta Community College last week, East Central head coach Brian Anderson and the Warriors have plenty to be excited about.
Not only did the Warriors pick up their third win of the season, the shutout was the first for East Central since 2006.
“Delta had no yards passing, less than 100 yards of total offense,” Anderson said. “It was just an unreal effort from our defense. When you take into account that this is college football, and the other team was averaging 300 yards a game, it was an awesome accomplishment by our players.”
Tonight, East Central will travel back home for its final home game of the season, as the Warriors take on Pearl River at 6:30 p.m. The Warriors will not only be battling a tough Wildcat team, but also a quick turnaround, as the team only had five days to prepare for the match up.
“We haven't had to do it this year, and this is where you have to rely on your sophomores that have been there before,” Anderson said. “You don't get time to prepare and watch as much film. You just really have to go in and go off of last week's preparation for the most part.”
Pearl River will also come off of a short week, as it heads into tonight's match up. The Wildcats offer a dangerous passing attacked led by Dylan Farve, son of ex NFL quarterback Brett Favre. The dual threat quarterback offers a strong arm as well as the ability to get to the edge and run past defenders. Anderson said, despite Pearl River's 2-5 record, the Wildcats have plenty of talent.
“They are capable of scoring 35 points in a quarter,” Anderson said. “Against Jones, they scored 28 points within a span of eight minutes, and we all know how good Jones is. Pearl River is just a really good team, the ball just hasn't bounced their way this year.”
As impressive as the East Central defense was during last week's win, Anderson said he believes the Warriors are finally coming around on offense as well. With season-ending injuries to Colton Kane and Keshun Shipp, the Warriors have seen other players step up to fill the holes, particularly quarterback Brock Hall.
“Brock Hall is a dangerous player,” Anderson said. “He is capable of making plays with his feet. When you can prolong a play with your feet and allow your receiver the chance to get down field, you develop a quick strike ability. He's getting more comfortable, and I trust him more now with the ball in his hands.”
East Central will look to build on last week's win, as the Warriors move closer to a season goal of five wins this year. After winning three of their last four games, Anderson said he sees a change in his team. The Warriors now believe they can win.
“The attitude is great,” Anderson said. “We are on a high. The attitude is the best it has been since I have been here, and the kids are excited to play.”
