Panthers wrap up 5-4A title

MERIDIAN —     The Quitman Panthers wrapped up the Region 5-4A championship Friday night with a 55-21 win against Northeast Jones. The Panthers scored 42 points in the opening half in claiming the win.

    Sophomore running back Josh Davis had a big night, as he ran for 250 yards on 20 carries and scored the Panthers’ first score of the night. Quitman ran for 375 yards on the night and added another 76 yards in the air.

    Quarterback Franklin Jones scored on runs of 8 and 2 yards as he rushed for 66 yards on 13 carries. Torian Howard had a good night, as he ran a kickoff 99 yards and scored from 6 yards out. The Panthers’ defense scored on a Josh Robinson fumble recovery and a Tarvarious Moore interception return.

    James Ayers passed for three scores in leading the Northeast Jones offense.

    The Panthers are 4-0 in region play and 9-1 overall, while NEJ falls to 3-1 and 7-3.

    “I am so proud of these players and coaches,” Quitman coach Steve Bynum said. “We knew this was the district championship tonight.”

    The Tigers scored on their third offensive play of the night when Ayers hit Cameron Breland on a 48-yard pass play with 7:47 to play in the opening period. Cole Byrd added the kick conversion.

    Quitman responded as they took over at the NEJ 33-yard line after a punt return of 29 yards by Moore. Three plays later, Davis ran 19 yards for the score. Dalton Smith kicked his first of six conversions in the opening half to tie the score at 7-7 with 3:46 to play in the first period.

    Quitman’s defense scored the next points when Moore caught a Tiger tipped pass and ran 33 yards for the score with 3:27 to play in the first period.

    The Panthers’ offense moved 39 yards in eight plays to score on a Jones run of 8 yards with 10:26 to play in the half to give Quitman a 21-7 lead.

    The Panthers expanded their lead to 28-7, moving 87 yards in three plays to score on Howard’s run of eight yards on a pitch from Jones. Davis’s 64-yard run set up the score that came with 7:49 to play in the half.

    Jones put the Panthers up 35-7 with 1:54 to play in the half when he completed a 59-yard 11-play drive with a two-yard run.

    The visiting Tigers had a high snap over Ayers’ head on their first play after the Panther kickoff. Robinson recovered the ball in the end zone putting the Panthers up 42-7 with 1:44 to play in the half.

    Northeast Jones came out in the second half and scored on a Ayers to McCurtis pass of 58 yards with 7:39 to play in the period .

    Quitman scored in fast fashion as Howard took the Tigers’ kickoff and scooted 99 yards for the score, upping the Panthers’ lead to 48-14.

    Ayers teamed up with Josh Hosey on a 5-yard pass play with 9:37 to play in the game as NEJ moved 60 yards in eight plays and was aided by five Quitman penalties.

    DeQuan Stanley closed the scoring on the night with a 1-yard sneak with 5:19 to play in the game.

    Quitman will host Newton County while Northeast Jones and Laurel will battle next week for second in the division.

        The Lady Cougars blanked Houston 10-0 Saturday at Freedom Ridge Park, completing an easy sweep of their best-of-three, Class 4A State Championship Series and gaining a measure of revenge after falling short a year ago.

        After 16 innings of big plays and tense moments, the Enterprise Lady Bulldogs fell just short of their third MHSAA Class 2A State Fast-Pitch Softball Championship on Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision in the decisive game three. But EHS head coach Davey Dewitt said he was pleased with the way his team played, battling East Webster to the last out.

    Former Clarkdale High School head football coach Chris Richmond is leaving the team to serve as a position coach at Neshoba Central next season. Richmond, who went 1-21 in his two seasons as the  Bulldogs head coach said the move to Neshoba will help him stay closer to his family

        That's how far away the Enterprise Lady Bulldogs are from closing out an amazing season. After beginning the year 4-8, EHS has won 15 of their last 19 games, including Friday afternoon's 6-3 win over East Webster in the MHSAA Class 2A Fast-Pitch Softball Championships.
