A trio of athletes from Clarkdale have qualified for the MHSAA Class 2A South State Track and Field Meet, which is slated for Saturday at St. Andrew’s.
Charmane Tims, Brooke Morrison and Crystal Clay all qualified for the South State meet by placing in the top four in their respective events during last weekend’s Region 3-2A Meet — which was also held at St. Andrew’s.
In fact, Tims and Clay brought home individual region championships.
Tims, a freshman, won the girls’ 100m dash in a time of 13.5 seconds; while Clay — an eighth-grader — was first in the girls’ shot put with a heave of 30 feet, 3.5 inches.
She edged fellow eighth-grader Querinda Beamon of Newton by one-half of an inch, while Newton’s Oshima McKee was third in the same event.
Morrison, meanwhile, placed fourth in the girls’ 400m dash with a time of 1:05.71.
Each of the Clarkdale trio — as well as all of the participants in the South State meet — will need to finish in the top four Saturday in order to qualify for the MHSAA Class 2A State Meet set for May 8 at Pearl.
The St. Andrew’s girls and Hinds AHS boys captured each of the Region 3-2A titles. The Lady Saints racked up 211 points, while the Hinds AHS boys tallied 176 points.
On the girls’ side, Newton High School was the region runner-up with 93 points, while Clarkdale placed sixth with 40 points. Union (28 points) was seventh and Philadelphia (17 points) ninth in the event, which featured 13 schools.
Philly’s boys tallied 62 points and placed fifth. The Tornadoes were followed by Newton in sixth place with 51.5 points and Union in seventh with 19 points. Clarkdale’s boys were ninth with 11 points.
In addition to Tims and Clay, three other events were won by area representatives in the Region 3-2A Meet, including a pair by Brandon Willis of Philadelphia.
Willis won the boys’ long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 9 inches for the Tornadoes, and he also captured the boys’ 100m dash with a time of 11.4 seconds.
Newton High School’s 4x100m girls’ relay team also was a region champ. Freshman Tynika Bender, sophomores Ashtin McNichols and Tityanna Puitt and junior Ladora Riley finished in 51.78 seconds to edge St. Andrew’s by 12 one-hundreths of a second.

Neel leaving champion War Eagles for Panthers
Eric Neel spent three seasons coach at East Central. The Hornets played in three state championship games.
Neel then coached the past three years at Wayne County, leading the War Eagles to three straight Class 5A fast-pitch state crowns.
And now, he doesn’t see why the same can’t occur at Quitman. After guiding Wayne County to its third straight championship Saturday, Neel resigned his position in Waynesboro on Thursday to replace Kacie Roberson at Quitman. -

The Drought Is Over
All Mason Irby was hoping for was to find a way on base.
The Southeast Lauderdale sophomore did that and so much more. Irby's single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a tie, lifting the Tigers to a 6-3 MHSAA Class 3A state championship win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday, and handing Southeast (32-7) its first title since 1966. -
Ramey shines again, hurls Tigers to MHSAA Class 3A crown
The bar was set pretty high.
After all, Southeast Lauderdale senior right-hander Colby Ramey needed just 65 pitches to beat Kossuth in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 3A state championship game Thursday.
However, according to fellow senior Blake McMullen, Ramey cleared the hurdle Wednesday when he scattered eight hits on 104 pitches to finish off the Aggies in a 6-3 state championship-clinching win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday. -
