LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama faces one of its toughest challenges of the season this afternoon when it returns to Gulf South Conference play and hits the road for No. 7 Delta State.

The Tigers (3-3, 1-2) will square off with DSU for the 53rd time. The Statesmen hold the lead in the series with a 31-18-3 record, with a distinct advantage the last decade.

UWA has lost nine of the last 10 meetings, including five straight.

West Alabama's trek to the Mississippi Delta is the second straight road contest for the Tigers, who picked up their first road victory since Oct. 28, 2006 with a 24-7 victory over Concordia in Selma, Ala. last Saturday.

UWA is looking to snap a six-game road losing streak in GSC play when the game kicks off at 3 p.m. in Cleveland.

Delta State (4-1, 3-0 GSC) returns to McCool Stadium after knocking off then-No. 1Valdosta State 27-24 in double overtime.

The Statesmen — who haven't lost at home since 2006 — have won three straight since their season opening loss at FCS McNeese State.

The series with the Statesmen — which began in 1940 with a scoreless tie in Cleveland — is the second longest in UWA history behind 59 meetings with North Alabama.

Crusaders use experience, speed to topple Tornadoes
Philadelphia and Sacred Heart both entered Friday's Class 1A/2A/3A soccer state championship game looking for their first state crown.
The Crusaders, though, had finished as runners-up the previous two seasons, and used that experience and their speed to their advantage as they scored three first half goals in route to a 3-1 win.

    A real life David vs. Goliath meeting took place in the Class 1A/2A/3A girls state championship soccer game Friday afternoon at Clinton High School's Arrow Field.
   Having never advanced farther than the second round of the MSHSAA soccer playoffs, Clarkdale entered looking to shock the state and win its first state title. In th way stood Our Lady Academy, a nine-time state champion from Bay St. Louis.
   The Crescents blanked the Bulldogs 5-0 for their third straight title and 10th since 2000.
