Enterprise downs NEL; Louisville sweeps doubleheader

Enterprise used a pair of late runs to hold off Northeast Lauderdale 7-5 in a makeup game from earlier in the season Monday night in area softball action.
The Lady Bulldogs (11-5) jumped out to a 5-2 lead through four-and-a-half innings. NEL added two in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to one, but Enterprise added another run in each of the final two innings.
A seventh-inning rally was cut short for the Lady Trojans, who were only able to add one more run.
Selena Irby led the way for EHS, driving in a pair of runs with a triple and a single. Madelyn Helms, Jordan Farrar and Haley Brooke Smith also added RBI singles for the visiting Lady Bulldogs.
Mallory Pace had a double and two singles for Northeast.
Ally Harper (10-1) picked up the win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Enterprise will travel to Taylorsville today, while the Lady Trojans host Quitman at Northeast Park. Both are division contests.

Southeast 15
West Lauderdale 3
Southeast Lauderdale broke open a two-run ball game in the fourth inning to run-rule cross-county rival West Lauderdale.
Holding a 5-3 lead, the Lady Tigers (11-6) scored seven runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to finish off WL.
Denisha Knight had four RBIs and three singles to lead Southeast. Lainie Simcox drove in three runs on three hits, two of which were doubles. Shelby Sheppard also had three hits and drove in two more of the Lady Tiger runs.
Paige Sheppard, Brittany Pounders, Laci Maxwell and Miranda Chatham each had two hits. One of Pounders' was a double. Southeast totaled 19 hits.
Taylor Bailey had two RBIs.
Nandi Franklin led off the game with a double and scored to give West the early lead. Lyndsie Fountain had a pair of singles for the Lady Knights. Emily Pogue took the loss for West.
Erin Conley (10-6) picked up the win for Southeast, which will be on the road against Morton tonight, while West goes to Northeast Jones.

New Hope 10
Neshoba Central 0
The Lady Rockets were blanked at home in their division-opener by Class 4A powerhouse New Hope.
The visiting Lady Trojans scored six times in the top of the first inning and added four more in the fourth. New Hope has won seven of the past eight Class 4A state championships.
Neshoba had just four hits on the nght, with Laurel Burnett getting two. Taylor Tucker and Abby Joiner had one apiece.
Brooke Phillips was the winning pitcher, while Sarah Breland was the loser.
Central, 9-4 overall and 0-1 in division play, goes to Newton County today and hosts West Point in a division doubleheader Thursday.

Louisville 17-20
Humphreys 0-10
The host Lady Wildcats swept a pair of contests from Humphreys County, winning 17-0 in the first game and 20-10 in the nightcap.
Louisville, which is now 17-1, hosts Winona today.
In Game 1 Monday, Dericka Hardin was 3-for-3 with two triples and Tiera Cummings was 2-for-2 with a homer and triple to lead Louisville. Tyi Young was 3-for-3 with three doubles and Kenyetta Ivy was 2-for-2 with a triple.
In the second game, Louisville scored nine times in the home half of the fifth inning to turn an 11-10 game into a blowout.
Ivy was 4-for-4 with a triple while winning pitcher Brianna Vaughn was 2-for-2 with a triple and a double. Cummings had three hits including a double, Tykeria Harris had two doubles, Young was 2-for-3 with a triple and Hardin was also 2-for-3.

Starkville Academy 7
Central Academy 3
The Lady Vikings dropped their regular-season finale at Class AAA Starkville Academy in area MPSA fast-pitch action.
Central, which is now 23-6, opens Class A North State Tournament play Wednesday at Bayou Academy in Cleveland.
In Monday's game, host Starkville scored twice each in the second, third and sixth innings.
Lyndsey Haynes was the winning pitcher; and Haynes, Kyla Morgan and Mary Austin Barber all had hits for SA.
Alex Dawkins (8-4) was the losing pitcher but also led Central with a single and double at the plate. Corey Dawkins and Kendall Taylor each had doubles, while Blake Rigdon, Lillian Lindsey, Marion Colvin and Hannah Martin had singles.

Neel leaving champion War Eagles for Panthers
Eric Neel spent three seasons coach at East Central. The Hornets played in three state championship games.
Neel then coached the past three years at Wayne County, leading the War Eagles to three straight Class 5A fast-pitch state crowns.
And now, he doesn’t see why the same can’t occur at Quitman. After guiding Wayne County to its third straight championship Saturday, Neel resigned his position in Waynesboro on Thursday to replace Kacie Roberson at Quitman. -

To be named the Player of the Year in Class 3A by the Mississippi Association of Coaches, that caught the Southeast Lauderdale senior off guard. -
RCA’s Lee and pair of Generals chosen for All-Star tilt
Russell Christian Academy senior Camryn Lee and Newton County Academy duo Clay Upton and Dillon Williams will wrap up their senior seasons today.
The local trio will play in the MAIS All-Star Class A game at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson at 2 p.m. The Class AA-AAA game will follow. -
McFarland named first-team All-American for Jones County
The honors continue to come in for the Jones County Junior College softball program.
Pitcher Ginger Lonergan and centerfielder Relanda McFarland were both named to the NJCAA Division II All-American first-team on Thursday. -

The Drought Is Over
All Mason Irby was hoping for was to find a way on base.
The Southeast Lauderdale sophomore did that and so much more. Irby's single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a tie, lifting the Tigers to a 6-3 MHSAA Class 3A state championship win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday, and handing Southeast (32-7) its first title since 1966. -
Ramey shines again, hurls Tigers to MHSAA Class 3A crown
The bar was set pretty high.
After all, Southeast Lauderdale senior right-hander Colby Ramey needed just 65 pitches to beat Kossuth in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 3A state championship game Thursday.
However, according to fellow senior Blake McMullen, Ramey cleared the hurdle Wednesday when he scattered eight hits on 104 pitches to finish off the Aggies in a 6-3 state championship-clinching win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday. -
