GENERAL

Wayne County Rebel Club Meeting

New Ole Miss head football coach, Houston Nutt will be the guest speaker at the Wayne County Rebel Club meeting on April 17, at the Waynesboro City Auditorium, at 6 p.m., with meal to follow. Club members cost is $15 and non-members cost is $20. Call for tickets at (601)764-4121.



DUATHLON

Sunfish Duathlon will be held Saturday April 5, at 9 a.m. at Lake Okatibbee. Entry fee is $25 for USAT members and $35 for non-members, before March 29; after March 29, cost is $30 for members and $40 for non-members; day of race is $35 and $45. FISHING

East Mississippi Sportsmen Association 38th Annual EMSA Busch Fishing Rodeo

This fishing rodeo will be held May 17, at Lake Okatibbee, at 5:30 a.m. at the Pat Harrison Water Park boat launch. Call Don Delaney at (601)485-5219.

Relay For Life Bass Tournament

Kids Fishing Derby

This free event for children ages 5-17 will be held April 19, at Sykes Park. Pre-register at the Parks and Recreation Office or register onsite from 7 a.m.- 8 a.m. Children should bring their own rod and reels, tackle, and bait and will be fishing for catfish. Call Mary Quince at (601)485-1805.



FOOTBALL

Adalius Thomas Football Camp

The Adalius Thomas Football Camp on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. This camp is free of charge and will be open to boys ages 9-17, and will be held Saturday, April 19. GOLF

H.G. Weddington Spring 4-Ball

The 2008 H.G. Weddington Spring 4-Ball Tournament is set for April 26-27 at Northwood Country Club. Entry fee is $200 per team. Players 70 and over may play from the gold tees. Championship flight will play from blue tees only. First 84 teams — first come for tee times, 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. For more information, call (601)483-5551.

Lamar Day Golf Tournament

This four man scramble format tournament will be held April 7 at a 1 p.m. shotgun start at Briarwood Country Club. Cost is $50 per team member. Call Ed Poole at (601)917-0933.

Lakeview Spring Blast

This three person shamble will be held on April 12-13 at Lakeview Golf Course. Cost is $60 per person and $5 mulligan. Tee times are 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

East Central Community College Warrior Golf Classic

This golf tournament will be held June 19 at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Choctaw. The four person scramble is on the Oaks Course and registration begins at 9 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Entry fee is $125 per person. This is an alumni association fundraising for scholarship money. 2008 Meridian Community College Alumni and Friends Golf Scramble

Relay For Life Three Person Scramble

Coaches Tournament Steve Hull Memorial

This golf tournament will be held June 5th at 10 a.m. at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course. Reception and pre-registration party will be held June 4th. This is a four person scramble (flighted) and cost is $500 per team. Corporate packages are available and discount hotel rooms and discount water park tickets available. SOFTBALL

East Mississippi Community College Tryouts

Tryouts for the East Mississippi Community College softball team will be held Sunday, April 6 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Scooba. MSA — The Meridian Swim Team

  • Young Eagles expect some growing pains in 2012

    The 2012 edition of the Meridian Community fast-pitch team will sport a multitude of new faces when it hits the field Friday for its season opener. The Eagles lost seven sophomores from last year as well as two returning freshmen.

  • Back in the spotlight

     SCOOBA – Sporting a current 12-game winning streak, the East Mississippi Community College men’s basketball team has re-entered the NJCAA Division I Top 20 tied for 19th nationally in this week’s poll.             Head coach Mark White’s 15-2 EMCC Lions tipped off the current season ranked seventh nationally on the strength of back-to-back NJCAA National Tournament appearances in Hutchinson, Kan.

    The Clarkdale girls’ basketball team served notice that it belonged among the top teams in MHSAA Class 2A with a 59-56 division win at defending 2A state champion Scott Central on January 31.

  • Northeast Lauderdale stuns, upsets Northeast Jones in opening round.

    Shaquanta McDonald and Tarmecia Mack each scored 10 points as The Trojans beat the Tigers 42-28 in the opening round of the District 5-4A District Tournament held at West Lauderdale Tuesday. Brittany Williams added nine points for Northeast Lauderdale (5-21).

    The defense was there, but the offense never came around and Meridian High saw its playoff hopes disappear as Oak Grove pulled away in the final minutes to knock off the host Wildcats 58-48 on Tuesday night in the Region 5-6A Tournament.

  • Kemper County wins thriller over Heidelberg

    In a division with traditional powerhouses Choctaw Central, Southeast Lauderdale and Newton – the fourth-and-fifth-seeded Kemper County and Heidelberg girls both were hoping to just punch their ticket to the Class 3A state playoffs and hope to hit a hot streak.
    Part one of that equation was successful for Kemper County Tuesday night, but it was far from easy.

         Coming off the most successful season of fast-pitch softball competition in the program’s history, the East Mississippi Community College Lions are set to open their 2012 softball campaign by playing host to Marion Military Institute Tuesday afternoon on the Scooba campus. First pitch for the season-opening doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.

         Rarely does a team commit 46 turnovers and not get run out of the gym, but the Union girls overcame their ballhandling woes to knock off Lake 41-38 in overtime of the MHSAA Division 6-2A Tournament Monday night.
