LIVINGSTON, Ala. — University of West Alabama Athletic Director Dee Outlaw on Thursday announced the resignation of head football coach Sam McCorkle, effective immediately.
McCorkle compiled an overall record of 24-62-2 over the course of two separate stints as head coach of the Tigers (1985-90 and 2004-05), including a 4-18 mark during the past two seasons. While at the helm, he also coached 21 All-Gulf South Conference selections.
"It has always been a great pride of mine to be a part of this university," McCorkle said. "It is my alma mater, a place I played and coached, and I feel that as long as I was here, I gave it everything I had. I believe our football program is on the verge of great things. We have an outstanding group of young men that represent our school well.
"I had always seen this as my last job, but sometimes things happen that are beyond our control," McCorkle said. "One thing I have always done is help these young people in every way I could. I feel that everything we did was for the betterment of our players and the program. I say with no hesitation that we have done everything by the rules of the NCAA, the GSC and UWA. We tried to win the right way. I would like to thank Dr. Holland, Dee Outlaw and the entire administration for supporting our football program during my time here."
Before his coaching days began, McCorkle was a three-time letterman at UWA and the starting center on the Tigers' 1971 NAIA national championship team. He was also named to the All-Alabama Small College Team and was chosen as the center for the UWA Team of the Decade.
"Sam has been and always will be a loyal supporter and worker for our University," Outlaw said. "We care about him and wish him well. At the same, however, we must move on. We will have a new coach in place as soon as possible, following the hiring guidelines we have at our university."
UWA officials have formed a search committee with hopes of having a new coach in place as soon as possible.

Slive focused on future after big changes
Mike Slive sprawls in a comfy arm chair, propping his feet on a coffee table between one massive tome on Winston Churchill and an even thicker "Encyclopedia of Southern Culture."
He's relaxed and feeling awfully good about the state of the Southeastern Conference.
It's a rare moment of calm for the SEC's cerebral commissioner, but he can afford it since his "A pile" of things to do has gotten considerably slimmer over the past two years. -
