MERIDIAN —
Two rounds into the Meridian Classic and a local is still gunning for the tournament title at Briarwood Country Club.
Following the completion of Thursday’s round of the event that is part of The Emerald Coast Golf Tour, Union’s Robert Ammon is tied for second and just one shot off the lead. Ammon, who shot a 66 in Wednesday’s first round to sit three shots back, fired a 69 on Thursday. He will be part of today’s final round’s final grouping, which starts at 10:10 a.m.
Joining Ammon in that grouping will be Greg Sonnier, the leader from the start of the tournament. Sonnier, a Lake Charles, La., resident shot a 63 on Wednesday before following that with Thursday’s 71. David Morland, of Palm Coast, Fla., matched Ammon with a 66 and a 69.
Glenn Northcutt shot the low round Thursday, firing a 65 to pull within five shots of Sonnier following a first-round 74. Zach Portemont shot a 66 on Thursday to climb into a tie for fourth, just two shots back.
Briarwood club pro Rob McGraw shot a 70 in Round 1 and a 72 in Round 2, sitting eight strokes off the lead.
Long hits hole-in-one at Northwood
Matt Long recorded a hole-in-one Thursday at Northwood Country Club.
While playing with Nick Brown, Eddie Brown and Don Bounds, Long used a wedge to ace the 130-yard No. 17.
