Roundup - MCC women roll past Coahoma

Tiara Logan scored her season-high of 19 points to lead the Meridian Community College women to ta 87-72 win Saturday against visiting Coahoma at Graham Gymnasium.

Sharda’e Johnson added 15 points, while LaDarica Campbell added 12 points for MCC (5-1). Brittany Bohannon pulled in 11 rebounds for MCC.

Eurika Nunnally, from Coahoma, led all scorers with a game-high 27.

The MCC women host Hinds Monday.

Freshman Emmanuel Donald scored his career-high of 14 points for MCC (3-4), while Jermaal Taylor added 12 points.

JaMarquis Lewis of Coahoma led all scorers with 18 points.

The Eagles return to action Monday against Hinds.

Lamar pulls away from Simpson late


In advancing to the MAIS Class AA state title game with a 42-28 win at Simpson Academy on Friday, Lamar showed its resolve late.

A month after Simpson rushed for more than 500 yards against the Raiders — most coming in the second half — Lamar held the Cougars to 328 yards of total offense, and only 95 yards rushing after intermission.

Lamar broke a 28-all tie in the fourth quarter as the Raiders racked up 430 yards of offense. Senior quarterback Witt Haggard threw for 200 yards and five touchdowns on 18-of-32 passing. Jamie Thompson hauled in five catches for 79 yards and three touchdowns, while John Clinton McElroy had 59 yards on five receptions. Bo Bidgood, who led the team with 85 yards rushing on seven attempts, hauled in five passes for 39 yards and one score.

Michael Marcello had 14 carries for 80 yards as Lamar rushed for 230 yards on 38 carries.

Justin Goldacker led Lamar with nine tackles, while William Fulton and Cameron Melancon had eight tackles each.
