After winning the MAIS 8-Man Division 1 title in a playoff jamboree Monday, the Calvary Christian Cougars are now just one step away from defending their state crown.
In Friday's semifinal, Calvary outgunned Mt. Salus Christian 86-48. The defending state champ Cougars will face Tensas Academy at 10 a.m. Thursday at Mississippi College for the state championship. Tensas, which lost to Calvary in last year's title game, beat Central Academy 70-6 in the other semifinal Friday.
"That's what our goal is," Calvary coach Kirby Newell said of playing for a second straight state title. "That's what we've been shooting for."
The Cougars (9-1) got started quickly, outscoring the Eagles 24-0 in the first quarter as senior quarterback Kyle Koch threw three touchdown passes. Koch, who completed 24 of 38 passes for 450 yards and eight TDs, first connected with Justin Sylvester from 12 yards out. Sylvester would also haul in an 18-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion toss in the opening period.
Koch also found Johnathan Bartlett on a 4-yard scoring pass.
The Cougars tacked on 34 more points before halftime, leading 58-20 at the break. Koch threw three more TD passes in the second — 50 yards to Sylvester, 3 yards to Bartlett and 13 yards to Bartlett — and scored on 57- and 80-yard runs. He finished with 314 yards and four TDs rushing on 15 carries.
Bartlett, who added a 26-yard touchdown reception in the fourth, hauled in a team-high 16 passes for 277 yards and four scores. Sylvester added 121 yards and four touchdowns on five catches.
Mt. Salus returned three kickoffs for touchdowns.

Perry Central 42
Clarkdale 7
After the top-seeded Bulldogs scored to take a 7-0 lead Friday, Clarkdale answered right back.
Clarkdale, the fourth seed from Region 5-3A, got a 1-yard run from Dusty Sullivan and PAT from Mason Tabb to knot the game at 7 in the first quarter. From there, though, it was all Perry Central.
"We played a good team and a real good back," Clarkdale coach Jud Gartman said of Nick Griffin, who entered with 1,796 yards and 22 touchdowns rushing.
Clarkdale finished the season 4-8.

Collins 27
Southeast Lauderdale 3
Southeast Lauderdale saw its season come to a close Friday night as homestanding Collins defeated the Tigers 27-3.
Southeast was the first to score as Brandon Bowen connected on a 27-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter. Unfortunately, that would be the only points Southeast scored as Collins put nine guys in the box to slow down the SEL rushing attack.
"We were not able to run the ball all night," Southeast coach Boo Smith said, noting the performance of Shelby Moseley, Nathan Freeze and D.D. Goudy for his Tigers. "They took our bread and butter away. While we were able to complete a few passes, we were not able to sustain anything."
Collins scored a touchdown at the end of the first and added another on a long touchdown pass to lead at half time 14-3.
Collins was able to tack on another touchdown in the third quarter. They then capitalized on a Southeast fumble inside its own 10 in the fourth to punch in the last score of the game. The extra point attempt was blocked.
Southeast ended the season with a mark of 5-7.

St. Stanislaus 49
Quitman 21
Quitman was able to run with the Rock-A-Chaw's high-octane passing attack for a half Friday night in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
However, the Panthers were able to muster just one first down in the second half as St. Stanislaus pulled away behind Dylan Favre's 498 passing yards and five touchdown passes. Favre also ran for a score as the Rock-A-Chaws jumped out to a 14-0 lead with the help of an onsides kick.
Quitman senior running back DeAnthony Pickens scored on runs of 23, 20 and 12 yards. The Panthers finish the season 6-6.

Loyd Star 41
Enterprise 27
The Bulldogs rushed for more than 400 yards but still fell on the road Friday night in the Class 2A playoffs.
Enterprise (6-5) fell behind 26-0 at halftime before mounting a comeback in the second half behind senior fullback Roshawn Johnson. Johnson, who entered with 917 yards despite missing four games with an injury, rushed for 197 yards on 24 carries. He also scored three touchdowns — 2, 1 and 5 yards — as he tried to lead the Bulldogs back.
Enterprise also got a 12-yard scoring run from Dusty Acreman.
Loyd Star (10-1) got two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Joseph Shelby, who also threw a 49-yard scoring strike to McKinley Hamilton. Senior tailback Zach Bond added 85 yards on eight carries for Enterprise, which finished with 407 rushing yards on 54 attempts.

East Marion 27
Scott Central 13
The Rebels, the top seed from Region 5-2A, scored on their first two possessions Friday before East Marion rallied.
Jimmy Broomfield scored on a 2-yard run on Scott Central's first drive, and Johnny McGee's kick gave the Rebels a 7-0 lead. Chris Ficklin then added a 35-yard run on the Rebels' second possession.
The Eagles (6-5) pulled within 13-6 in the first quarter on a 5-yard run from sophomore running back Xavier Grindle.
Grindle would add a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter. East Marion, though, ook the lead in the third quarter with a 41-yard pass from Shaun Oliver to Leonard Johnson. Grindle's two-point run gave the Eagles a 14-13 lead before Johnson then scored on a 16-yard run.
Ficklin led Scott Central with 87 yards on 14 carries, while Broomfield added 82 yards on 21 carries as the Rebels finished 10-2.

Picayune 27
Wayne County 21
PICAYUNE — Picayune finally ended the jinx. The Maroon Tide, who have had their season ended in the playoffs three of the past four seasons by Wayne County finally got their revenge in a thrilling 27-21 win Friday night. The teams were playing only their third regular season game and their first since 1994.
Chris Burton caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Kennedy with 16 seconds to play to lead the Maroon Tide to their first win against the War Eagles. The Tide marched 82 yards in 15 plays and converted two fourth-down plays in the deciding final eight minutes of the game.
Picayune is now 7-3 but more importantly finished second in Region 3-5A and will host a playoff game next week. Wayne County, which fell to 8-3, placed third in region play and will travel to Gautier next Friday night in the playoffs.
The home team scored twice in the first period, once early in the second period, and looked like they were going to run WC out of Mississippi. Jonathan Moore caught a 16-yard pass from Kennedy in the first period and Jamal Hall ran 5 yards to give the Tide a 14-0 lead. In the opening minutes of the second period, Scottie Merrill snatched a 3-yard pass from Kennedy, and after Dalton Omeara’s third conversion kick, Picayune led 21-0.
The War Eagles regrouped as Malik Lofton returned a kickoff 93 yards for the visitors, who were making only their second trip to Picayune and first since 1994.
Trailing 21-7 at halftime, quarterback Demarcus Henderson hit Lofton on a 51-yard pass play as WC closed the gap to 21-14 with 10 minutes to play in the third period.
Ray Bowman ran 3 yards to tie the score at 21 with three minutes to play in the third period, ending an 11-play 71-yard drive. Garrett Reynolds kicked his third extra point of the night to knot the score.
West Jones finished first in region play, while Brookhaven was seated fourth and will join the War Eagles and the Maroon Tide in the playoffs.
