Kayla Phillips registered a hat trick and the Clarkdale girls soccer team used a big first half to advance to the MHSAA Class 1A/2A/3A North State championship game.
The Bulldogs led 4-0 at halftime on the way to a 5-1 drubbing of host Greenville-St. Joseph on Saturday to reach the North State title game, which Clarkdale will host Tuesday against the Choctaw Central-McLaurin winner.
In downing the Fighting Irish, Phillips got started early, making a chip shot off an indirect penalty kick with 27:50 left in the first half. Five minutes later, Haley Hutcherson pushed the advantage to 2-0 and then Phillips struck again.
Just one minute after Hutcherson's goal, Phillips took a Heather Harwell pass and headed it in to put Clarkdale up 3-0. She added her third goal in the second half to conclude the scoring.
The Bulldogs' final goal before halftime game with 9:50 left, when Kennedy Castleberry took advantage of the blustery conditions, hitting a long shot that caught the win and landed in the back of the net.
Armed with that 4-0 lead, the Bulldogs withstood an early goal from St. Joe as the Irish scored on a high corner kick that rode the wind and curved into the corner of the goal just seven minutes into the half.
Seven minutes later, Phillips completed her hat trick off a Hutcherson pass.
