MCC falls in Region 23 Tournament

MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College women's basketball saw its season come to an end Thursday night, as the No. 8- seeded Eagles lost 62-52 to No.1-seeded  Coping-Lincoln in the Region 23 Tournament at Mississippi College.

The Eagles played the heavily-favored Wolfpack to within three points at the half, trailing Co-Lin 28-25 at the break. However, Co-Lin took advantage of MCC turnovers in the second half to come away with the win.

“Our main focus starting out was to limit our turnovers and block out,” MCC head coach Jocelyn McGillberry said. “Those two thing we started out doing well, but we kind of slacked up a little bit, and the game got out of hand.”

LaVasha Allen led the Co-Lin (24-3)  with 13 points on the night, while Ashley Minor and Chanta Poole both chipped in with 10 points for the Wolfpack.

MCC lost freshman starter Victoria Stewart early in the game due to a knee injury early in the game.

“That kind of put us in a slump,” McGillberry said. “Victoria started out the game with two big threes that got the team riled up. After that we started to dig a hole.”

The loss gives MCC a final record of 20-11 this season. Although the Eagles run was cut shorter than the team would have hoped, McGillberry said she is proud of her team's ability to overcome adversity in her first season as MCC's head coach.

“The kids played hard,” McGillberry said. “They played hard till the end, and I respect that. Even though we came out with a loss, I'd rather end the season with this type of loss than go out not playing hard.”
