MERIDIAN —
At 6-foot, 225 pounds with a 4.4 time in the 40-yard dash, almost nothing stops Richmond, Va., running back Derrick Green.
The class of 2013 recruit is the No.1 rated running back according to Rivals.com and has offers from almost every school in the nation. Thursday, Green narrowed his list of college choices to six schools, with Ole Miss making the cut along with Auburn, Michigan Oregon, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
“I like just the academics and the atmosphere,” Green said. “I also really like the coaching staff they have over there.”
Green said Ole Miss coaches have had nothing but praise for his performance on the field and told him he would fit well into the team’s run-heavy offense.
“The person I talk to the most is my position coach, coach (Derrick) Nix” Green said. “Coach (Chris) Kiffin just told me I am the main guy the want in recruiting. They really like me.
“They like my speed along with my size. They definitely see me fitting into their program with all the things they are doing in their offense.”
While visiting, Green also sat down with first-year head coach Hugh Freeze to talk about how Green would fit into the team’s plans if he decided to commit.
Green said he enjoyed talking to Freeze and is confident Ole Miss is in the right hands and poised for a turnaround.
“I spoke to him when I went down to my visit, and he is really down-to-earth,” Green said. “He just told me all the stuff he wants me to be a part of at the program. He just told me all the things he’s going to do with the program; he’s definitely going to turn the program around.”
Green is also confident he could play a big role in the Rebel’s re-emergence if he decided to commit to Ole Miss.
“I think I have a good chance to do that if I went there,” Green said. “To go there and do that would be a blessing.”
The No.12-rated player in the nation, Green said he is comfortable at all six schools he selected and said each school would allow him to compete at a high level in college.
“I could win a Heisman at any one of those six schools,” Green said. “That’s one of my goals, and I think all the schools give me that opportunity.”
Green will now focus his attention on preparing for his senior season at Hermitage High School. However, he said he would like to narrow his list of school sometime in the near future if he can. Green said he also plans to take visits, including one to Ole Miss, sometime during during the season.
