MERIDIAN —
East Central Community College head coach Brian Anderson has preached to his team, the first win is always hard to get.
Last week the Warriors earned their first win, as East Central beat the Southwest Community College 16-10.
The Warriors will face a new challenge today, as they try to continue their success against Hinds Community College at 2:30 for East Central's homecoming.
“We enjoyed our win for a couple days, but you have to get back to work,” Anderson said. “You can't get too high or too low, but the win really did improve our morale.”
Anderson knows his team will have its hands full, as they prepare for one of the most talented teams they have seen so far.
Although Hinds is just 2-2 on the season, Anderson said they are a better team than their record indicates.
“Hinds is just a really quality football team loaded with talent,” Anderson said. “Defensively they have a good team, and it starts up front for them. Across the front they are 285, 300, 320, and they have a guy that is about 265. They can all flat out run. They are the most attack-oriented defense we will play.”
Last week, the Warriors received a stellar performance from sophomore running back Keshun Shipp. The 5-foot-9, 215-pound running back from Olive Branch rushed his way to 141 yards on 25 carries against Southwest. This week the Warriors will need another big day from Shipp if they are going to move the ball against a talented Hinds defense.
“I have to just step up,” Shipp said. “I mean, it's hard going without Colton Kane, because he was such a big help for the offense. I just have to make more plays and try to get the offense to do what we can do.”
East Central will look to capitalize on the extra rest, as the Warriors had an extra two days off to prepare due to homecoming. Anderson said the extra rest is much needed, as he is still trying to replace the loss of Colton Kane at quarterback.
“We were glad to have a long week to prepare this week,” Anderson said. “Honestly, our offense is in week two and everybody else's defense is in week eight. We are trying to discover ourselves and find things we can do to move the football.”
Despite the turnover, the team has rallied behind backups Zak Thrasher and Brock Hall. Anderson said he will use both Thrasher and Hall depending on certain situations in the game.
“I'm comfortable with either Zak (Thrasher) or Brock (Hall) coming into the game,” Shipp said. “I think after this last game we came together as a team and our confidence is rising. I feel like everything is going to go accordingly.”
The East Central players know what they are up against when it comes to playing a quality team such as Hinds. However, Shipp said he and his teammates believe in each other and are not scared of anyone.
“I've played lines like this before,” Shipp said. “It is nothing that we can't handle, we just have to go out and play hard. It is a bigger challenge, and it might be tough, but I think it will work out for us.”
