MERIDIAN —
Tay Ruffin went for a game-high 27 points and Southeast Lauderdale beat Crystal Springs 69-44 on Monday night in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs.
Kameshia Pringle scored 18 points in the win, while Jordan Gentry added 14.
The Tigers (23-8) will take on Collins at Forest High School in the South State tournament on Thursday night.

Columbia 43
Ameonia House dropped in a game-high 18 points as the Panthers downed Columbia by 21 points on Monday night in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs.
Jalonda Jones had 12 points in the victory, while Amy Cooks added 10.
Quitman (24-4) will travel to Forrest County AHS on Thursday to take on Raymond in the Class 4A South State tournament.

Jefferson County 38
The Tigers eased into the second round of the Class 3A playoffs downing Jefferson County on Monday night.
Tynika Bender scored 18 points, while Chasisty Blaylock added 17. Henricka Ooten had 14 points in the win.

Southwest CC 66
The Warriors improved to 6-3 in the MACJC South Division as they edged out Southwest on Monday night.
Kelcia Bufkin scored a game-high 31 points, whil Ja'Monica Orton added 12.
East Central (7-12) can clinch a spot in the playoffs with a win Thursday night against Hinds Community College.

The Warriors fell to 1-18 on the season with a 20-points loss to Southwest on Monday night.
Jimmy Broomfield led East Central with 14 points, while Lavadious Lyles added 11.
ECCC will host Hinds on Thursday night.

MCC women 75
EMCC 57
The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles contiuned its winning ways over East Mississippi Community College by taking a 75-57 victory on Monday night at the Currie Coliseum in Scooba. The Lady Eagles improved to 13-10 overall for the season and swept the season series over the Lady Lions. MCC defeated EMCC 59-54 earlier in the season in Meridian. East Mississipi dropped its overall record to 6-14 with the loss to Meridian.
The Lady Eagles are currently 4-1 in Miss-Lou Conference play this season and will look to remain at the top of the conference standings after Wednesday night. East Mississippi will return to MACJC North Division action on Thursday night at home against Mississippi Delta. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Lions are currently 3-6 in MACJC North Division play this season.
ReRe Stinner led the Lady Eagles with 12 points and Gelese Lampton followed with 11 points. Chasity Kearney finished the game with 10 points and Norianna Haynes added eight points.

MCC 64
The East Mississippi Lions survived a huge scare from the Eagles and were able to hold on for the overtime victory. MCC held a 31-28 lead at the end of the first half and both team exchanged the lead on several occasions in the second half. EMCC was able to hold on the overtime period to escape with the win over MCC. The Lions are currently ranked No. 19 in the country according to the latest NJCAA poll and have won 14 straight games. The loss for Meridian snapped its current three-game winning streak.
T.J. Jones and Tajh Ford led the way for the Eagles with 14 points in the loss for MCC. D.J. Evans led EMCC with 26 points, while Colin Borchet added 22.

Meridian jumps out to early lead in opener
The Meridian Community College golf team started the season off on a high note by firing a 301 to lead the Faulkner State Invitational.
"I was very glad that we have the lead after the first round," said MCC golf coach Clinton Hales. "We have another great chance at winning a tournament and getting our spring started well."
MCC is looking to build on its success of the fall season after winning three tournaments and being ranked number one according to the NJCAA.
Easton Key leads the overall field after shooting a 71 and leads fellow team member T.J. Morgan by two strokes. Morgan fired a first round 73 and Dylan Brown ended the day with a first round 78. Jake Sterling finished the day with a 79 and Gafford White scored an 82 to end his opening round.

Neel leaving champion War Eagles for Panthers
Eric Neel spent three seasons coach at East Central. The Hornets played in three state championship games.
Neel then coached the past three years at Wayne County, leading the War Eagles to three straight Class 5A fast-pitch state crowns.
And now, he doesn’t see why the same can’t occur at Quitman. After guiding Wayne County to its third straight championship Saturday, Neel resigned his position in Waynesboro on Thursday to replace Kacie Roberson at Quitman. -

To be named the Player of the Year in Class 3A by the Mississippi Association of Coaches, that caught the Southeast Lauderdale senior off guard. -
RCA’s Lee and pair of Generals chosen for All-Star tilt
Russell Christian Academy senior Camryn Lee and Newton County Academy duo Clay Upton and Dillon Williams will wrap up their senior seasons today.
The local trio will play in the MAIS All-Star Class A game at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson at 2 p.m. The Class AA-AAA game will follow. -
McFarland named first-team All-American for Jones County
The honors continue to come in for the Jones County Junior College softball program.
Pitcher Ginger Lonergan and centerfielder Relanda McFarland were both named to the NJCAA Division II All-American first-team on Thursday. -

The Drought Is Over
All Mason Irby was hoping for was to find a way on base.
The Southeast Lauderdale sophomore did that and so much more. Irby's single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a tie, lifting the Tigers to a 6-3 MHSAA Class 3A state championship win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday, and handing Southeast (32-7) its first title since 1966. -
Ramey shines again, hurls Tigers to MHSAA Class 3A crown
The bar was set pretty high.
After all, Southeast Lauderdale senior right-hander Colby Ramey needed just 65 pitches to beat Kossuth in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 3A state championship game Thursday.
However, according to fellow senior Blake McMullen, Ramey cleared the hurdle Wednesday when he scattered eight hits on 104 pitches to finish off the Aggies in a 6-3 state championship-clinching win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday. -
