MERIDIAN —
The Northeast Lauderdale Trojans, behind the running brothers Josh and Phillip Everett, throttled the Newton High School Tigers on Friday night in a season-opening home win 45-7.
Quarterback Josh Everett ran for 142 yards on 10 carries for two touchdowns, while Phillip Everett toted the ball 18 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns. For the game, the Trojans outgained the Tigers 383 yards to 123 yards on the ground.
Backup running back, Kendarious Naylor added a 5-yard burst for a score in the second half while the defense got into the act led by linebacker William Serton who returned an interception 30 yards for a first quarter score. Mikey Myers added to the score with a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter.
It was clear from the very beginning the quickness and speed of the Everett brothers, boosted by the trap blocking of the offensive line, was going to be a major problem for Newton when on just the second play from scrimmage, Josh Everett tucked the ball and outran the Tiger defenders 42 yards for the Trojan's first score. Myers put the PAT through the uprights for an early 7-0 Trojan lead.
Newton's first possession turned disastrous as Serton stepped in front of a pass attempt and raced the other way for the 30-yard pick six. Again, Meyers was true and with 9:50 left in the first quarter Northeast had built a 14-0 cushion.
Later in the first quarter, the Trojans marched 66 yards in nine plays to the Tiger 14-yard line. The drive stalled and Meyers booted his 33-yard field goal through the uprights giving Northeast a 17-0 lead.
The Trojans struck again quickly early in the second quarter, this time Phillip Everett did the honors. Taking the handoff from his brother, Phillip Everett followed his blockers through a gaping hole in the left side of the defense, juked two would-be tacklers and sped the 27 yards to the end zone. The PAT was good and the Trojans were enjoying a 24-0 lead.
The Trojan defense just would not let the Tiger offense get any sort of rhythm going. Time and again the defense turned the Newton offense outside and strung the play out ending in negative yardage. With 1:11 left in the half, Newton was running in the negative yardage category.
Josh Everett, dropping back to pass from the Newton 23, saw that his receiver was covered and pulled the ball down. He scrambled out of two arm tackles and sprinted 23 yards for the score. Meyers added another PAT and Northeast took a commanding 31-0 lead into halftime.
Faizon Ross was stripped of the ball as he tried to return the second half kickoff for the Tigers and the Trojans pounced on it at the Newton 21-yard line. Two plays later, Josh Everett ran in from 21 yards out. The successful PAT made it 38-0.
The Tigers finally got on the board when quarterback Marcus Blalock lowered his shoulder from 3 yards out. The PAT was good and Newton was on the board but still with a lot of work to do to get back in the game.
Naylor capped an 11-play, 80 yard drive midway through the third quarter with a 5-yard burst and with Meyers' PAT, gave the Trojans the final winning margin to start their 2012 campaign.
