MERIDIAN —
East Mississippi Community College picked up its first win against Southwest Mississippi in 11 years Thursday night.
And the No.1 Lions did it in impressive fashion, routing the host Bears 59-6 at John I. Hurst Stadium in Summitt as the defending national champions scored the game’s first 59 points. The two schools hadn’t played since 2007. It was the 10th time under Buddy Stephens that the Lions topped the 50-point mark and EMCC also set a Stephens era total offense record, racking up 742 yards. EMCC threw for 444 yards and rushed for 298 more to top the old mark of 714.
EMCC, which moved to 3-0 and won its 15th straight game, used a big game from freshman quarterback Quez Johnson and sophomore wide receiver Martay Maddox, a transfer from South Carolina, to blow the game open in the first half. Johnson, who was completing only 52.1 percent of his passes entering Thursday’s game for 482 total yards, easily topped that. Playing just one drive into the second half, Johnson completed 21 of 28 passes for 382 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. In the first half, Johnson threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns.
Maddox was his favorite target, hauling in six passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns. The two hooked up for a 49-yard score with 9:36 left in the first quarter and then hit a 29-yard touchdown and a 42-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Corey Smith hauled in a 61-yard scoring strike with 23.8 seconds left before halftime that pushed EMCC’s lead to 38-0. Smith then caught a 5-yard touchdown with 8:13 left in the third quarter on Johnson’s final drive.
Sophomore running back Rodriguez Moore gave EMCC the lead for good when he scored from 2 yards out on the first drive of the game. Moore finished with 74 yards on 14 carries.
Freshman quarterback Dontreall Pruitt threw two touchdown passes, 9 yards to Tray Tarleton and 11 yards to Lakendric Thomas.
The Bears scored their lone touchdown with 7:57 remaining.
EMCC now begins MACJC North Division play Thursday when Mississippi Delta visits Sullivan-Windham Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Lions have won the North three out of the past four seasons.
