MERIDIAN —
The Quitman girls basketball team jumped out early and held off a ferocious fourth-quarter comeback by Southeast Lauderdale to claim the 2012 Sam Dale Tournament 57-47 on Saturday night in Vimville.
The Panthers (13-4) looked to have things on cruise control throughout a majority of the contest leading by double digits after each of the first three quarters of play. However, the Tigers showed resolve and cut a 13-point deficit down to four with 1:11 left behind a stingy full-court press. Unfortunately, Southeast could not maintain the spark and Quitman pulled away behind Ameonia House's clutch free throw shooting to ice the win.
"They are tough," said Quitman coach Mike Coleman. "We knew how it was going to be, coming into the game. Our turnovers really killed us at the end of the fourth quarter and let them back in the game. They cut that lead down pretty quick. I know we had at least 20 turnovers in that second half and that is way too many.
"I thought they were about to win the ballgame and then Ameonia stepped up big for us at the end and made some great plays. I'm glad we had a big lead at halftime because if we wouldn't have it would have been a whole different story."
House, the tournament MVP, had 11 points for the Panthers, while Tatyana Dobbins had a team-best 12 in the win. Shonte' Hailes added nine.
Southeast (12-5) was led by Tay Ruffin's game-high 15 points. Jasmine Bush scored 13, while Anna Beth Caves ended her night with 12 points.
"This was a big win for us heading forward," added Coleman. "We only have one game left that is not a division game so hopefully this will give us some momentum."
