MERIDIAN —     East Mississippi sophomore standouts CoCo Ware and Martika Hull have been named to the 2009-10 NJCAA All-Region 23 basketball teams, as voted on by the head coaches of the community colleges located in the states of Mississippi and Louisiana.

    A repeat all-region performer, Ware leads head coach Mark White's NJCAA Tournament-bound EMCC Lions in scoring (20.2 ppg) and steals (2.7 spg), along with ranking as the team's No. 2 rebounder (6.1 rpg) and second-leading playmaker (2.3 apg) on the year.

    Named to this year's Preseason NJCAA All-American Second Team, Ware is also a repeat selection to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-North State First Team. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard has

eclipsed the 30-point mark five times this season. Most recently, Ware was chosen to last week's NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament squad after scoring 80 total points over three games (26.7 ppg) to help lead the 26-5 and 12th-ranked EMCC Lions to the school's first-ever appearance in next week's (March 16-20) NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in Hutchinson, Kan.

    For his career, Ware enters the upcoming NJCAA Tournament having totaled 1,163 points (19.7 ppg), 370 rebounds (6.3 rpg), 167 steals (2.8 spg) and 112 assists (1.9 apg) during his 59-game East Mississippi career.

    Joining Ware on this year's MACJC All-North State First Team is EMCC freshman guard Deonte Alexander. A 6-foot, 175-pound guard, Alexander is East Mississippi's second-leading scorer (12.6 ppg) and top playmaker (3.5 apg) on the season. In addition, Alexander is averaging 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest. He also accompanied Ware on last week's NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament club after scoring 17 points on 4-of-5 3-point accuracy in EMCC's 78-64 win against Itawamba in Thursday's championship game.

    East Central's Antonio Grace was a second-team MACJC All-South State selection.

    For the women, EMCC's Martika Hull is a first-time recipient of the 10 member NJCAA All-Region 23 team honor. A former standout at Southeast Lauderdale, Hull led the 15-13 Lions in scoring (15.5 ppg), rebounding (8.8 rpg), steals (2.3 spg) and field-goal percentage (52.9 percent) this past year. The 5-foot-11 forward recorded 11 double-doubles as a sophomore to finish with 18 double-doubles for her two-year career in Scooba. Last week in Clinton, Hull was tabbed to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament team after averaging 18.5 points and 14.0 rebounds in her two regional outings.

    A repeat selection to the five-player MACJC All-North State First Team, Hull completed her stellar two-year EMCC career with 847 points (14.4 ppg), 470 rebounds (8.0 rpg) and 124 steals (2.1 spg). She also shot 57 percent from the field and 64 percent from the charity stripe for her career, while helping pace the Lions to a two-year composite record of 40-20, including last year's NJCAA Tournament appearance and MACJC North Division championship.

    Joining Hull as a first team All-State selection was East Central's Danielle Cole of Philadelphia. Cole earned the nod for the South Divison. Cole led the Warriors with 15.1 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Neel leaving champion War Eagles for Panthers
    Eric Neel spent three seasons coach at East Central. The Hornets played in three state championship games.
   Neel then coached the past three years at Wayne County, leading the War Eagles to three straight Class 5A fast-pitch state crowns.
   And now, he doesn’t see why the same can’t occur at Quitman. After guiding Wayne County to its third straight championship Saturday, Neel resigned his position in Waynesboro on Thursday to replace Kacie Roberson at Quitman.

RCA’s Lee and pair of Generals chosen for All-Star tilt
Russell Christian Academy senior Camryn Lee and Newton County Academy duo Clay Upton and Dillon Williams will wrap up their senior seasons today.
The local trio will play in the MAIS All-Star Class A game at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson at 2 p.m. The Class AA-AAA game will follow.

The Drought Is Over
All Mason Irby was hoping for was to find a way on base.
The Southeast Lauderdale sophomore did that and so much more. Irby's single with two outs in the seventh inning broke a tie, lifting the Tigers to a 6-3 MHSAA Class 3A state championship win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday, and handing Southeast (32-7) its first title since 1966.

Ramey shines again, hurls Tigers to MHSAA Class 3A crown
    The bar was set pretty high.
   After all, Southeast Lauderdale senior right-hander Colby Ramey needed just 65 pitches to beat Kossuth in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 3A state championship game Thursday.
   However, according to fellow senior Blake McMullen, Ramey cleared the hurdle Wednesday when he scattered eight hits on 104 pitches to finish off the Aggies in a 6-3 state championship-clinching win at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday.
