Roundup: Newton County Academy sweeps Russell

MERIDIAN —     Despite 18 points from Tyler Bolden, Russell Christian Academy fell to visiting Newton County Academy 45-38 on Monday at Meridian Community College’s Graham Gymnasium.

   The Warriors fell to 8-2 and 3-2 in the division with the loss.

   NCA, which improved to 6-1, was led by Tre’ Collins’ 18 and Nick Pennington’s 10. Tanner Smith added 14 rebounds for the Generals, who visit East Rankin Academy today.

   The Warriors fell to 3-9 overall after Anna James led them with six points Monday.

   The Generals, who travel to East Rankin Academy today, were paced by Faith Hollingsworth’s 28.

Richmond hits ace at Briarwood

   Bob Richmond began playing golf while in the Air Force and 50 years later, he still has it as he proved Saturday.

   While playing with Ken Tillman, Ted Waddell and Ray Durden, Richmond hit a hole-in-one on the 125-yard, par-3 No. 16 at Briarwood Country Club.

   It was his second ace, the first coming 45 years ago.

East Central swept at Northwest

   Competition in 2012 ended on a disappointing note for East Central Community College’s basketball squads who fell to Northwest Mississippi Community College teams Saturday afternoon on the Senatobia campus.

   The ECCC women were outscored by a 72-59 margin and the Warriors dropped an 82-69 decision.

   Sophomore guard Xzandra Dowd poured in 25 points to lead EC’s women, who fell to 4-7 under first-year head coach Crandal Porter. Reneisha Evans, of Newton County, had 18 rebounds while Dowd hauled in 11.

   Tiesha Tunstall tallied 16 points to lead the Rangers, who improved to 8-2. Northwest led 33-22 at halftime.

   In the men’s contest, sophomores Hakeem Wesley pumped in 22 points and Aquill Baynard chipped in 17 but the Warriors remain winless in 11 starts under seven-year head coach Maurice Bowie.

   DeMarcus McVay scored 17 point to lead the Rangers, who improved to 6-3. EC trailed 45-26 at the break.

   The Warriors resume play by traveling to East Mississippi Community College on Jan. 8.
