MCC Eagles open with victory

MERIDIAN —     The Meridian Community College Eagles baseball team opened their 2010 home schedule with a 7-6 victory over Shelton State Monday. The Eagles improved to 2-2 overall.

    Meridian's Corey Dickerson got things rolling for the Eagles early with a leadoff double to start the game. Dickerson went two-for-five for the day.

    Meridian scored one run in each in the first and second innings before Shelton State managed to put four runs on the board in the third inning.

    Shelton State led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Meridian's Ben Kingsley came up big with a two-run homer that tied the game at 6-6. Kingsley finished the day two-for-four with one home run and three RBIs.

    Former Meridian High standout Kenny Roberts advanced MCC's Kenny Sanders across the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the 7-6 win for the Eagles. Sanders finished at two-for-three with a double while Roberts finished two-for-four with a double.

    Blake Hennington started the day on the mound for the Eagles going five innings. Former West Lauderdale standout Dustin McWiliams got the win for the Eagles in relief. Daniel Allen and Peyton Gardner also saw time on the mound for MCC.
