MERIDIAN —
Russell Christian Academy remained undefeated, as the Warriors shut out Rebul Academy 48-0 on Friday night.
Quarterback Jacob Howse got things going for the Warriors as he connected with wide receiver Ben McGraw from 14 yards out to give Russell Christian a 7-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, Howse found fellow quarterback Kyle Russell on a 15-yard pass to extend the lead to 14-0. Head coach Nate Ballard said the tall and athletic Russell will start getting more looks from the wide receiver position from now on.
“You will probably start seeing that more often,” Ballard said. “We are going to try to use his big frame, he's got some great hands.”
After an 18-yard touchdown run from Ashton Temple put the Warriors up 21-0, Russell showed he could be just a dangerous at quarterback, as he connected with McGraw for a touchdown to extend the lead to 28-0.
From there, Russell Christian coasted to an easy victory. Walker Mosby ran in two touchdowns and Adam Shaw added another as the Warriors moved to 3-0 on the season.
“It feels great,” Ballard said. “The defense was great, we held them to only 48 yards total offense. I'm just ecstatic.”
Russel Christian will travel to Delta Academy next week.
“They like to do some trickery,” Ballard said. “We have to be on our toes to know what to do on different reads.”

Quitman 45
Heidelberg 13
The Panthers made quick work of the visiting Oilers.
It was cornerback Jamott Duncan who led the way for the Panthers as the cornerback came up with two interceptions on the night, including one in the end zone to kill a Heidelberg drive early in the game.
“It was big-time for him,” Quitman coach Steve Bynum said. “Our defense is our youngest spot. Each week, we get better.”
Quarterback Franklin Jones also had a big game for Quitman, accounting for more than 225 total yards.
The undefeated Panthers travel to Meridian High School next, as they take on a Wildcat team that defeated them 35-7 last season.
“Anytime you can play at Ray Stadium and that atmosphere it is great,” Bynum said. “It's extremely exciting, and our guys are excited about the opportunity.”

Slive focused on future after big changes
Mike Slive sprawls in a comfy arm chair, propping his feet on a coffee table between one massive tome on Winston Churchill and an even thicker "Encyclopedia of Southern Culture."
He's relaxed and feeling awfully good about the state of the Southeastern Conference.
It's a rare moment of calm for the SEC's cerebral commissioner, but he can afford it since his "A pile" of things to do has gotten considerably slimmer over the past two years. -
