MERIDIAN —
Southeast Lauderdale remembers. And now the Tigers have a chance for payback.
Last season, South Pontotoc eliminated the Tigers from the MHSAA Class 1A/2A/3A playoffs in a shootout. Today, Southeast hosts the Cougars at 6 p.m. in a second-round match.
South Pontotoc (11-5) won its first-round match Tuesday 3-1 against McLaurin, receiving a pair of first-half goals from Matt Collums and a goal after the break from Cole Caples.
“We have a lot of energy,” Southeast coach Mike Thomas said. “We’re well aware of last year and we’ve been given another chance and I think we’re ready to take advantage of it.”
Southeast, which improved to 11-4, definitely looked the part in Tuesday’s first round as it dominated Winona from the outset in a 5-0 win.
“We played with a lot of energy,” Thomas said. “And at practice (Wednesday), I walked around and talked to all of them about making sure that energy is going to be there again.”
The Tigers received a pair of goals from Hunter Graham along with single goals from Kavares Martin, Andrew Bernard and Josh Brown. Southeast also allowed just one shot on goal as its defense and keeper Noah Johnson were rarely tested.
“We stepped up our play and we reaped the benefits,” Thomas added.
And with it, another shot at South Pontotoc.
