Roundup — Southeast boys soccer clinches division title

MERIDIAN —      The Southeast Lauderdale boys soccer team made history Friday night, netting the program’s first division championship with a 3-0 win against Choctaw Central.

     Scoring for the Tigers, who will host a Class 1A/2A/3A first-round playoff game Tuesday, were Andrew Bernard, Josh Brown and Josh Johnson.

     The Bulldogs got a division win behind goals from Kayla Phillips, Haley Hutcherson and Haley Dupre with an assist from Reagan Dupre.

Meridian girls   0

     The Wildcats, who were eliminated from playoff contention Tuesday, were edged by the rival Warriors in Friday’s season finale. Meridian, which had just two seniors, finishes the season 12-6-2.

Heidelberg girls 17

     The Tigers rolled in Division 5-3A play Friday as they trounced the Oilers, getting double-doubles from Crystal Clay and Jasmine Bush.

     Clay led Southeast, which improved to 20-1 and 4-0 in the division, with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Bush added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kamesha Pringle had 12 points.

     Torlorf Thomas led four Wildcats in double figures with 21 as MHS moved to 17-4 and 4-0 in Division 5-6A on the road.

     Also finishing in double figures for Meridian were Jorden Andrews with 18, Dennis Miles with 15 and Davontae Brewster with 13.

     The Wildcats play Vicksburg on Monday in the MLK Shootout at Lanier.

     Staked to a 40-35 halftime lead, Northeast increased the margin to seven points and continued to maintain a five-point lead (53-48) with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation. A 3-pointer by Lion freshman guard Mack Foster ignited a 10-0 EMCC run that put the visitors back on top for the first time since midway through the opening half.

     Improving to 9-4 overall and 2-0 within the division, the Lions received 47 combined points from sophomore transfers Jarekious Bradley — 26 points — and Brown, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

EMCC women   42

     After trailing 25-17 at halftime and still down by eight points (36-28) midway through the second stanza, the EMCC women went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to grab their first lead of the game (37-36) on a Savannah Kimmons putback at the 7:25 mark. Kimmons, along with fellow freshman Charmane Tims (Clarkdale) and sophomore Dajah McCarty (Quitman) combined to score all 25 of EMCC’s second-half points on collective 11-of-17 field-goal shooting.

     Unfortunately, the visitors could not sustain the momentum and faded away down the stretch.

     Now 2-11 overall and 0-2 within the division, the Lions were led by Tims’ 12 points, including 11 in the second half coming on 3-of-5 3-point shooting. Kimmons followed with nine points — six in the second half on 3-of-4 shooting — to go along with her game-high 12 rebounds. All eight of McCarty’s points, on 4-of-5 field goals, came after the break.
