MERIDIAN —
The Meridian Community College men and women opened the 2012 Friday afternoon at Co-Lin by taking a pair of road victories to begin the season on the right note. MCC returns to the field this Tuesday with a pair of road matches at Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The MCC women took an 8-0 win against the Wolves, while the MCC men took a dramatic 3-2 win.
Katelynn Zuk led MCC with three goals in the women’s game and earned one assist. Kristen Morris added a pair of goals in the shutout victory for the Eagles.
The MCC men opened the season with a slim win. Ducky Troutman, Kellen Roberts and Blake Hardin each scored one goal in the win for MCC.

Pearl River sweeps East Central
The East Central men fell to 0-2 on the young season in the home debut Saturday, falling 3-1 to Pearl River (2-0).
McGee Ledbetter scored the Warriors’ lone goal.
In the women’s game, ECCC lost its season opener 8-0 to 2-0 PRCC.
The East Central soccer teams now travel to Jones County Junior College on Tuesday.

David Haggard Jr. hit a hole-in-one Thursday at Briarwood Country Club.
Haggard used a sand wedge on the No. 13 hole while playing with Dawson Dyess.

Hull records first ace
Leslie Hull hit his first hole-in-one Friday at the Peninsula Golf Course in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The par-3, 185-yard fifth hole on the Cypress Course was made with a 3 hybrid and witnessed by Ricky Mauldin, Mike Peavey and Wayne Powell.

Ray leads Northwood Club Championship
David Ray shot a 68 on Saturday to lead the Northwood Country Club Men’s Golf Association Club Championship’s scratch division.
With the 68, Ray holds a one shot lead over John Rea. Bobby Maddox (70), Jarrod Moulds (73), Walter Rogers (74), Joey Mabry (78) and Tommy Cason (83) follow.
In senior scratch, Paul Entrekin leads after shooting a 73. Ronnie Posey is second with a 75.
Bruce Roberts leads the senior and super senior handicap race with a 69, one shot clear of Bill McBride, Joe Pettey and Leon Harris. Gerry McBride shot a 71 and Greg Swanson shot a 78.
In the grand senior handicap division, Wayne Goodman’s 69 leads, followed by Joe McClurkin at 71 and Bill Wolfe at 72.

Strickland, Davidson share Briarwood lead
Lance Strickland and Aaron Davidson each opened play in the Briarwood County Club’s club championship with a 73 to lead the A Division.
Billy McWilliams follows after firing a 74. Roy Davis (75), Jim Daniels (76) and Willie Frazier (76) also are competing in the A Division.
The B Division leaders are George Follett and Glenn Strickland, each shooting a 78. They are followed by Nick Long, Wayne Boren and Jimmy Richardson, all shooting 79s; Robert Monsour, Scotty Peek and Joey Alexander, all shooting 80s; and Charlie Jackson, who shot an 81.
In the C Division, there is a four-way tie with Mike Easterwood, JC Martin, Alex Stegall and David Haggard all shooting 82. One shot back are Jace Weaver and Walter Williams, followed by Ben Willliams and Brad Dunlap, each with an 85, and Mike Johnson’s 86.
In the women’s club championship, Melanie Reed’s 88 leads, followed by Kay Godfrey (92), Tiffany Plott (98), Helen Clark (101), Sandra McLaughlin (101), Janice Aycock (102), Geneva Wedgeworth (102), Linda Neal (102), Debbie Ford (107), Carol Tomkins (107), Sue Tuberville (110) and L.A. Vicars (112).

PREP SOFTBALL
Southeast wins two in Enterprise tourney
For the third time in four meetings this season, Southeast Lauderdale downed rival Northeast Lauderdale on Saturday. In opening the Enterprise tournament, the Tigers won 14-4 and then followed with a 6-5 win against Harrison Central.
Against Northeast, Denisha Knight led SEL’s 14-hit attack with three hits, as did Nancy Williams. Lauren Yeager, Timara Trussell and Katie Dawson all had two hits and Megan Chatham doubled.
Taylor Powell earned the win, moving her and Southeast to 7-1.
Haley Randal had a double for Northeast, which scored all four runs in the first inning.
Against Harrison Central, the Tigers rallied from an early 3-0 hole to move to 8-1.
Dawson went 4-for-4 to lead Southeast, which also got two hits from Knight and Williams. Powell helped her own cause, going 2-for-2.
Harrison Central got two hits apiece from Karla Santiango, Kim Gilbert and Kaylen Koshab.
The Tigers host Clarkdale on Monday in a makeup game.

Newton County extends win streak
The Cougars beat Union 13-0 and Harrison Central 14-1 in the Enterprise tournament on Saturday to move to 9-0 on the season and push its winning streak to 54 games.
Newton County plays at Neshoba Central on Tuesday.

Roy shows big-league talent in win

A sixth inning rally by Lewisburg handed the Newton County Cougars their first lost of the postseason, 2-0, in Game 1 of the Class 4A baseball championship at Trustmark Park.

Bulldogs win again, beat S. Carolina in SEC Tournament
Demarcus Henderson and Wes Rea both had RBI singles in the ninth inning to lift Mississippi State to a 5-3 win over South Carolina Wednesday night in the second round of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
The Bulldogs (42-16) loaded the bases with one out before Henderson and Rea drove in runs on consecutive at-bats for the second time in the game.
Mississippi State had beaten Missouri 2-1 in 17 innings Tuesday night, matching the longest game in SEC tournament history.
Reliever Myles Gentry (4-0) limited the Gamecocks (39-17) to a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth.
Gentry pitched 5-2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight.
Rea was 3 for 4 while Henderson drove in three runs.
Mississippi State led 3-0 before South Carolina tied it up in the fourth.
Max Schrock drew a bases loaded walk and Brison Celek followed with a two-run single. -
Hogs top Ole Miss in SEC Tournament
For the second time this season the Rebels played an extra-inning affair with the Razorbacks, but with a different outcome as No. 21 Ole Miss (37-21) fell to No. 15 Arkansas (36-19) 2-1 in 10 innings on Wednesday.

Morgan takes runner-up at Nationals
Meridian Community College golfer, TJ Morgan, from Bruce, MS, tied for the
individual medalist at the NJCAA D1 National Championship held in Lubbock, TX, but lost on the first hole of a playoff. TJ shot 7 under for the tournament with a 76 on the first day followed by 68, 67 and a last round 70. Aksel Olsen from Wallace State Community College won the playoff.
