MERIDIAN —
For the second time in as many years, the Lamar Raiders steamrolled Enterprise High School, beating the Bulldogs 42-14 at Grey Cobb Field on Friday.
Both team's fans packed the stadium, as a sell-out crowd came to see the private school vs. public school battle. Lamar did not disappoint as the Raiders wore out the Bulldogs, getting stronger as the game went on.
“I'll tell you what, I'm real proud of our guys’ toughness,” Lamar head coach Mac Barnes said. “We won two straight games because we have stayed strong and were in good shape in the second half. We played hard, we played two good teams and I'm very pleased at were we are right now.”
Leading the way for Lamar was its powerful running back Corey Skinner, who carried the ball 15 times for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns.
“We did this as a team,” Skinner said. “You can't just give it to one guy. Without the blocking from my offensive line, I couldn't do any.”
Friday's game appeared to be a defensive struggle at first with neither team getting much done on offense. However, Lamar quarterback Barrett Dudley opened the scoring when he found running back Lee Martin on a 41-yard touchdown with 5:46 left in the quarter.
Lamar padded its lead again in the second when Skinner pounded the ball from the 1-yard line to make the score 13-0.
“Touchdown,” Skinner said. “Touchdown, that's all I was thinking.”
However Enterprise battled back, as Bulldog running back David Stephens found a hole and dashed 61 yards for a touchdown to make the score 13-7. Enterprise rallied back again capitalizing on an interception and driving the ball down for a touchdown to take the lead.
With 2:26 left in the half, it was Skinner again who came up big, running in another touchdown this time from 11 yards out to give the Raiders a 21-14 lead after a two-point conversion going into the half.
“I think we didn't play a very good football game,” Enterprise head coach Kelly Jimmerson said at the half. “We didn't block, we didn't tackle very well, and that is the reason the score is the way it is.”
In the second half it was all Raiders, as Lamar shut down a tired and cramping Enterprise team en route to its second win of the season.
“I can't describe the feeling of winning this game two years in a row,” Skinner said. “It it just an amazing feeling to have, beating a public school. It is just hard to explain how it feels.”
Lamar (2-0) will travel to Winston Academy on Friday, while Enterprise (0-1) will host Poplarville.
“We just got to build off of this,” Skinner said of the win. “We just have to build on it.”
