OVERLAND PARK, Kan. —
Junior Easton Key collected his first collegiate championship Tuesday at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, while also leading the Arkansas State men's golf team to a third-place finish among 14 teams with a combined 881 score at Milburn Golf and Country Club.
Key, a former Lamar and Meridian Community College star, came in under par all three rounds to finish with a combined 6-under 210, three strokes ahead of second-place Nathan Anderson of North Dakota State. Key's 210 was the lowest three-round score assembled by an A-State player since Chris Pledger posted a 209 during the 2010-11 season. Key carded a 70 today, which followed his career-best 69 and 71 shot during the first and second rounds, respectively.
"It feels great to get my first collegiate win here at Arkansas State," said Key. "The whole team has been working really hard, and my teammates have been great motivators for me all season.
“I knew that if I kept having patience that it would click one week and this just happened to be the week that it finally did. The course set up well for me and I really enjoyed it, even during our practice round."
The Red Wolves shot a first-round 295 and a season-best 290 during the second round played yesterday to end the day in third place. A-State was able to maintain its position today with a 296, and it finished just nine strokes behind runner-up North
Dakota State. UMKC was able to claim the championship with an 870.
"I'm pleased with the way our team played, especially today under some very harsh weather conditions with strong winds throughout the day," said ASU coach Steve Johnson. "I thought the guys really grinded it out, and it was encouraging to
see them secure this third-place finish.”

Morgan takes runner-up at Nationals
Meridian Community College golfer, TJ Morgan, from Bruce, MS, tied for the
individual medalist at the NJCAA D1 National Championship held in Lubbock, TX, but lost on the first hole of a playoff. TJ shot 7 under for the tournament with a 76 on the first day followed by 68, 67 and a last round 70. Aksel Olsen from Wallace State Community College won the playoff. TJ was named First Team All-American for his high finish. -
