Roundup: Meridian edges past Oak Grove

MERIDIAN —     Meridian slid past Oak Grove 55-52 in girls prep basketball action Friday. The win moves the 'Cats to 16-2 overall and 2-0 in division play. Oak Grove fell to 19-2 and 1-1.

    Kala Gordon led the Wildcats with 16 points. Denetrius Smith added ten points while Jasmine Cherry led the defensive effort. Oak Grove's Kalynn Smith finished the night with 19 points.

    Meridian will be back in action Tuesday at Pearl.

    The Wildcats improved to 2-0 in Division 5-6A and 15-4 overall after routing the visiting Warriors.

    Dennis Miles was one of three Wildcats to score 14 points to pace MHS, joined by Robert Peden and Devontae Brewster.

    Meridian visits Petal on Tuesday.

Clarkdale    36



    Southeast Lauderdale blasted Clarkdale 77-36 in girls prep basketball action. The win improves the Tigers record to 18-1 overall.

    Southeast's Jasmine Bush had a standout night scoring 20 points. Bush added 19 rebounds, ten steals, and nine blocks.

    Kamesha Pringle added 16 points to the win. Tayy Ruffin finished with 12 points. Clarkdale's Ashley Dunn led the Bulldogs with 19 points.

    Southeast gets back in action Tuesday hosting Philadelphia.

    Southeast Lauderdale boys took a 90-31 victory against Clarkdale Friday. The win evens Southeast's record at 7-7 overall and 2-0 in division play.

    Jake Smith led the offensive effort for the Tigers with 17 points. Demario Malone added 16 points to the effort. Lederrick Armstrong finished with 14 points. Clarkdale's leading scorer was Derias Cross with 17 points.

    The Tigers will be back on the court Tuesday hosting Philadelphia.

NE Jones boys    53



    Newton County boys edged out a 55-53 win versus Northeast Jones Friday in the Newton County Invitational.

    Newton County and Choctaw Central girls will face off today at 3:15 p.m. in a consolidation game. For the boys, Choctaw Central and Northeast Jones face off at 4:30 p.m.

    In championship action, West Lauderdale and Northeast Jones girls meet at 6 p.m. today while West Lauderdale and Newton County boys are set for 7:30 p.m.

Quitman boys     57

Newton     37

    

    Josh Cannon and the Quitman boys basketball team took down Newton 57-37 Friday night.

    Cannon scored 13 points on the night, while Jadarious Avery scored 10 points for Quitman in the win.

    Demitric Edwards led Newton with eight points in a losing effort.

    The win improves Quitman to 12-4 on the season. The Panthers will play Laurel at home on Tuesday.

Lamar girls     63

Kemper Academy     34



    The Lamar girls basketball team was back to its winning ways Friday night, beating Kemper Academy 63-34.

    Olivia Mabry led the way for the Raiders, scoring 22 points, while Allie Shirley tallied 13 en route to the easy victory.

    The Raiders improved to 18-4 with the win.

And while no one knows what today holds in the Class 5A State Championship Series, the Lady Rockets zipped through East Central like a hot knife through butter in Ridgeland Friday night.

        That's how far away the Enterprise Lady Bulldogs are from closing out an amazing season. After beginning the year 4-8, EHS has won 15 of their last 19 games, including Friday afternoon's 6-3 win over East Webster in the MHSAA Class 2A Fast-Pitch Softball Championships.
