MTA honors Davis with George Wilkinson Memorial Award

MERIDIAN —     Mallory Davis, a freshman tennis player for Meridian Community College and former Lafayette standout, has been selected by the Mississippi Tennis Association as the recipient of the prestigious George Wilkinson Memorial Award.

Nominations are made through the MTA website; these nominations then go to a committee who selects the winners.  The George Wilkinson Memorial Award is given to a male and female outstanding junior player who exemplifies the qualities of composure under physical stress and emotional discipline in recognition of their desire, integrity, perseverance, maturity (on and off the court), conduct and appearance. Davis will travel to Jackson in January to receive this award.

Davis has had an outstanding start to her career at MCC. She is playing No. 2 doubles with partner Madison Gillette and No. 2 or 3 singles. Davis is undefeated against junior college players in fall dual match play. She had a successful freshman appearance in the USTA/ITA Southern Region Championships.

Her most recent success came this past weekend in a non-sanctioned tournament at the University of West Alabama. Davis was the singles finalist in the “B” draw which saw players from UWA, the University of West Georgia and MCC compete.

“Although I am quite impressed with Mallory’s tennis, I am equally impressed with the person that she is,” Meridian coach Wanda McPhail said. “She handles herself extremely well on the court.  She is very competitive and certainly plays hard, but she conducts herself like a champion both on and off the court.

“I was and am still very excited that she decided to become a MCC Eagle.”

Davis has been playing tennis since she was about 10 years old when her dad, an avid player himself, took her to the courts and started giving her lessons. She has played several junior tennis tournaments in her career and has played junior team tennis.

Davis was an outstanding success as a high school tennis player.  As a senior at Lafayette, she compiled a 22-6 record and as a junior, she went 19-2.

“While playing for her high school, she played every position while leading the team to the North half finals,”  according to her high school coach, Debbie Swindoll. “Mallory is an extremely hard-worker and is very dependable.

“The family support she has received over the years has helped Mal reach this potential.”

Davis is a two time Class 4A state mixed doubles’ champion and was selected to the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star tournament.
