POPLARVILLE — The South Division champion Pearl River Community College Wildcats host the 2012 MACJC State Soccer Tournament (women’s and men’s) here Saturday and Sunday.
On the men’s side, participants include South No. 1 Pearl River (11-0 overall) and No. 2 Jones County (5-7-1) and North No. 1 Holmes (11-3-1) and No. 2 East Central (10-5-3); while on the women’s side, participants include South No. 1 Jones County (11-0-1) and No. 2 Pearl River (9-2) and North No. 1 Hinds (12-3) and No. 2 Itawamba (7-6-1).
The host Wildcats have played two tournament participants, sweeping Jones County by 5-0 and 3-1 scores and defeating East Central 3-1. The Wildcats played only Jones County during the regular season and were swept 3-2 and 2-0 by the Bobcats.
MCC splits with ICC
The Meridian Community College women’s soccer team closed out the 2012 regular season by securing a 2-1 victory against Itawamba Community College at C.D. Smith Field Wednesday night.
Sophomore Pam Gean scored the opening goal for MCC in the first 10 minutes to give the Eagles a quick lead.
Itawamba was able to tie the game at 1-1 after one half of play, but the Eagles were able to grab a second half score to take the victory. Gean added her second goal of the match in the final half to propel MCC to the victory.
The Meridian Community College Eagles were unable to complete the sweep by dropping the men's match by a final score of 4-1.
Kellen Roberts scored the lone goal of the match for the Eagles in the first half.
Warriors beat Rangers; prepare for playoffs
Clint McGraw’s goal late in second half action provided the playoff-bound East Central Community College men’s soccer team with the winning margin in a 3-2 victory against division foe Northwest Mississippi Community College in the regular season finale held Tuesday on the Senatobia campus.
The Warriors improved to 10-5-3 overall and finished tied with Holmes Community College for the MACJC North Division title with a 5-2-1 mark.
Next up for EC is a first-ever appearance in the MACJC sate tournament. The Warriors battle Pearl River at 5 p.m. Saturday in the single-elimination event. Holmes and Jones County meet at 1 p.m.
McGraw’s game-winning goal came in the 72nd minute. Will Thompson, of Newton County, was credited with an assist.
Drew Norman gave EC a 1-0 lead on a direct free kick in the 30th minute. Taylor Potter also scored for EC on an unassisted goal in the 48th minute. In the women’s contest, EC was edged by a 3-2 margin.
Morgan Luke and Kelsey Tadlock scored for East Central, which finishes 3-14 and 2-6.
Luke’s goal came in the 61st minute and Tadlock tallied on an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.
Tadlock was also credited with a scoring assist on Luke’s goal. Luke is a freshman midfielder and Tadlock is a sophomore forward. Both are products of Newton County High School.
Northwest scorers were Alex Young (36th minute), Kristin Young (51st minute) and Andrea Colston (82nd minute).

Enterprise falls twice to East Webster
It just wasn't to be.
After 16 innings of big plays and tense moments, the Enterprise Lady Bulldogs fell just short of their third MHSAA Class 2A State Fast-Pitch Softball Championship on Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision in the decisive game three. But EHS head coach Davey Dewitt said he was pleased with the way his team played, battling East Webster to the last out. -
Richmond leaves Clarkdale for Neshoba Central
Former Clarkdale High School head football coach Chris Richmond is leaving the team to serve as a position coach at Neshoba Central next season. Richmond, who went 1-21 in his two seasons as the Bulldogs head coach said the move to Neshoba will help him stay closer to his family

Neshoba Central’s last two rounds of the state softball playoffs involved grueling series wins over Lake Cormorant and New Hope. And while no one knows what today holds in the Class 5A State Championship Series, the Lady Rockets zipped through East Central like a hot knife through butter in Ridgeland Friday night.
