Hornets swarm Bulldogs

MERIDIAN —     The Lake Hornets used a swarming defense that forced three first half turnovers to spoil homecoming for the Clarkdale Bulldogs as Lake earned their third win of the year 42-7 at Chris Mabry Field.

While the Hornet defense was setting up their offense in excellent field position, the offense was capitalizing on the good fortunes for big play after big play. It wouldn't take Lake long to set the tone for the night.

After the Hornet defense held the Bulldogs to a three plays and out to open the game, Lake took over at their own 42-yard line.

After losing two yards on first down, junior quarterback Matt Mitchell kept the ball up the middle and broke four Bulldog tackle attempts on a 60-yard scamper. Jeremy Brandon put the PAT through the uprights and with barely 10 minutes off the clock Lake had grabbed a 7-0 lead.

Clarkdale suffered their first turnover of the game when they fumbled on their first play of their second possession setting the Hornets up at the Bulldog 22. But the Bulldog defense stymied the Lake offense forcing a 37-yard field goal attempt by Brandon that sailed wide right.

Clarkdale had dodged a bullet but its next drive was stopped by another fumble, this time at its own 34. Two plays later, running back John Spivey slashed in from 35 yards out. Brandon's PAT was again true and Lake led 14-0 with just under six minutes left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs would cough up the ball again, this time at their own 40. Mitchell, on the fourth play of the drive, sped in from 21 yards out and Brandon's PAT extended the Hornet lead to 21-0.

Into the second quarter, Clarkdale failed on a fourth-down pass attempt at midfield and Lake took over. Mitchell connected with junior wideout Razarius Anderson down the right sideline who easily outran the Bulldog cornerback for the fourth Lake touchdown. The PAT drove the score to 28-0.

Later in the half, Brandon contributed to the score again, this time by running back a punt 70 yards. He caught his breath long enough to put the PAT through and at the half the Hornets were comfortably ahead of the Bulldogs, 35-0.

Clarkdale, ironically, avoided the homecoming shutout when after a Hornet

fumble, Austin Emerson bulled in from 1-yard out to give the home team

something to cheer about. Dontae Shelby booted the PAT and Clarkdale was

on the board but still trailing by a 35-7 score.

Sophomore running back, D'marquis Pederson, would end the scoring with a fourth quarter, 5-yard run up the middle. The PAT was good and the Hornets took the short ride home with a 42-7 victory.
