Tournament action takes a break this weekend as bowlers prepare to celebrate Easter. With the conclusion of the Youth City Tournament this past weekend, all local organizations have crowned their champions. One more full weekend of tournament action will take place next weekend, April 22-23 when the Knights of Columbus will hold their annual state tournament at Dixie Bowl.
Following that, tournament action will subside for a bit, but other tournaments are slated during the summer including Stan’s Classic Tournaments 8-game Scratch and Handicap Sweeper and the S.A.S.B.A., which will be making a tour stop here in July. This event was originally scheduled for last September but was moved due to Hurricane Katrina. And don’t forget the annual Doubles Tournament, which this year will take place during the months of August and September.
Stan Bottorff has announced that he will be hosting a weekly Colored Pin No-Tap each Friday during the summer. This popular event will take place every Friday at 7 p.m. beginning June 2 through August 18. Each week will be a separate event and will feature cash bonuses for various combinations of colored pins as well as the popular Spin the Wheel feature. Men and Women will compete separately. The entry fee will be $20 per person each week. You may bowl as often as you like. In addition, Strike Pot tickets will be sold each week and an optional 300 Game Strike Pot will be available. The Meridian Women’s Bowling Association Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 at the Scottish Rites Building located at the corner of 11th Street and 23rd Avenue. All ladies are encouraged to attend. The election of officers and directors for next season will take place at this time. In addition, City Tournament prize money will be distributed.
Action has begun in the Mississippi Women’s Bowling Association State Tournament at Rivergate Bowl in Natchez and will continue each weekend through June 11. The guys will kick off their annual state tournament April 29 at Hub Lanes in Hattiesburg and compete through June 4.
In local action, four guys tied for the high game last week with a 269. Rodney Bounds, M.A. Copeland, Jim Broderick Jr and Mike Cothern all pounded out the leading score. M.A. grabbed the high series for the week with a 730 while Rodney came close by lighting up the lanes with a 724 in the Wednesday Night Mixed. Congratulations go out to Steve Shehea who pounded out his highest career game by collecting a big 246 in the Hucklebuck league.
The ladies continued to put up some good numbers. Linda Genin showed them all how it is done by blasting a nice 232 game in the Senior Non-Smoking league while Matar McClinton showed husband Leslie who wears the pants in the family with a 226. Eunice Dillard did the same to James when she collected a nice 224 and Kim Shirley did here part to prove that blondes can bowl too as she scattered pins in a 225 effort. Other ladies dancing in the aisle included Debbie Jones, Judy Harwell, Janice Kasper, Mary Copeland, Pat James, Taneezia Cook, Cathy Jones, Robin McNeil, Mary Edmonds, Lori Evans and Barbara Holden.

From Spygate to Mark Sanchez’s sideline hot dog eating to Bill Belichick’s cutoff hoodies, the AFC East is the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis of the NFL. There will likely be a changing of the guard in this season’s AFC East. Move over New England, here comes Fireman Ed and the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

Higginbotham was one of more than 200 media representatives on hand nearly 15 years ago to document Steve McNair’s chase for the Heisman trophy. McNair, who was found dead in Nashville on Saturday, went on to finish third in the Heisman race before a storied 13-year professional career which included a Most Valuable Player trophy.
